What is Gromwell Root (Zi Cao) extract?
Gromwell root extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, a plant of the borage family (Boraginaceae) whose root is a striking dark red to purple color. In traditional Chinese herbalism the root is known as Zi Cao, which translates as purple grass, and in pharmacy references as Radix Lithospermi; in English it is called gromwell, purple gromwell, or red-root gromwell. Our extract is made from the root of the plant and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not isolated shikonin, the purple pigment found in the root. The root has also long been valued as a natural red and purple dye. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Lithospermum erythrorhizon.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lithospermum erythrorhizon root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as shikonin, or the soft Zi Cao (Arnebia)?
No to both. This product is a whole-root extract of Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Shikonin is a single purple pigment compound naturally present in the root, often studied on its own or used as a natural colorant - our extract preserves the root's own spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating that one isolated compound. As for the herb itself, the traditional Chinese name Zi Cao is used for more than one plant: the hard Zi Cao is Lithospermum erythrorhizon (our species), while the soft, or Xinjiang, Zi Cao is Arnebia euchroma, a different plant in the same borage family. The gromwell name is likewise shared by several related plants. Our product is specifically Lithospermum erythrorhizon, and the root is also historically known as a source of red and purple dye. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Gromwell Root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Note that the extract may carry the root's natural reddish-purple color.
Is Gromwell Root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
