Important safety information - please read carefully before use

Chang Shan naturally contains febrifugine alkaloids. Please read these cautions before use.

  • External use only - never internal: this product is for topical use and must not be swallowed. Chang Shan contains febrifugine alkaloids, which are strongly irritating to the stomach and can be harmful to the liver if taken internally, which is why we offer it strictly for external use.
  • Skin: apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds or broken skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may sting on sensitive skin.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • May stain: this extract may stain clothing - allow it to dry.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chang Shan Extract
What is Chang Shan (Dichroa febrifuga) topical extract?
Chang Shan is the common name for Dichroa febrifuga, a shrub of the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae), also called Chinese Quinine and Blue Evergreen Hydrangea; the dried root is known in pharmacy as Radix Dichroae. This is a liquid extract of the dried root FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This tincture is an alcohol extract, applied to intact skin. Chang Shan naturally contains febrifugine alkaloids, which can upset the stomach and be hard on the liver if taken internally, which is why we offer it strictly for external use. Please read the important safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Dichroa febrifuga root for external use; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead. Choose whichever suits your topical routine. The root inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is Chang Shan the same as Sevenbark or true Hydrangea?
No - they are different plants in the same family and are sometimes confused. Chang Shan is Dichroa febrifuga, nicknamed Blue Evergreen Hydrangea, and we use its root. Sevenbark is Hydrangea arborescens (wild hydrangea), which we list separately, also using the root. They both belong to the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae) but are different genera and are not interchangeable. We label this page clearly as Dichroa febrifuga root.
How do I use Chang Shan topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds or broken skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not take it internally. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may sting on sensitive skin, and it may stain clothing, so allow it to dry. Discontinue use if any irritation or reaction occurs. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Chang Shan topical safe for everyone? Important safety information.

Skin: apply to intact skin only, not to open wounds; avoid the eyes and mucous membranes; do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Chang Shan (Dichroa Febrifuga) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
