Frequently Asked Questions about Chrysanthemum Extract
What is Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) flower extract?
Chrysanthemum is a flowering plant of the daisy or aster family (Asteraceae), botanically Chrysanthemum morifolium, often called the florist's chrysanthemum or simply "mum." In traditional Chinese herbalism its dried flower is known as Ju Hua. The part used here is the flower. It is one of the best-loved flowers in the world, grown both as an ornamental and for chrysanthemum tea. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. The flowers naturally contain flavonoids. This is a whole-flower liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Chrysanthemum morifolium flower; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the flower's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
How is this different from chrysanthemum tea, garden mums, or other species?
A few clarifications help here. First, form: chrysanthemum, or Ju Hua, is very popular as a tea made by steeping the dried flowers, and it is also grown everywhere as ornamental garden and florist "mums." Our product is neither of those - it is a liquid extract of the flower that you take by the drop, a concentrated format distinct from loose tea and from a decorative plant. Second, species: our chrysanthemum is Chrysanthemum morifolium (the florist's chrysanthemum, Ju Hua). It is different from Chrysanthemum indicum, the wild chrysanthemum known as Ye Ju Hua, and it is completely different from the pyrethrum daisy (Tanacetum), which is grown to make insecticide. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Chrysanthemum morifolium) and plant part (flower) so there is no confusion with the tea, the garden mums, or the other species.
How do I use Chrysanthemum liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Chrysanthemum extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Chrysanthemum is not right for everyone. It is in the daisy family (Asteraceae) and is a well-known plant allergen, so people who are allergic to plants such as ragweed, daisies, marigolds, or chrysanthemums themselves may react to it - use caution if you have these sensitivities. Do not use it during pregnancy. Chrysanthemum may make some people more sensitive to sunlight. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum Morifolium) Flower is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
