Heart Formula Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of six herbs extracted together: the red berry of the hedgerow hawthorn, a bitter mint-family herb, the seed of the wild dog rose, the kitchen garlic bulb, a lemon-scented mint and the orange turmeric rhizome. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product that interacts with common medicines and is not a replacement for any prescribed treatment - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Hawthorn berry - the small red autumn fruit of a thorny tree of European hedgerows; the berry is used here, while the leaf and flower are a separate preparation used in our Strong Heart blend.
  • Motherwort - a tall, bitter mint-family herb with whorls of small pink flowers, named for its long history in the care of mothers; the flowering herb is used.
  • Rosehips seed - the hard seeds inside the scarlet hips of the wild dog rose, Rosa canina, gathered after the petals fall.
  • Garlic bulb - the dried bulb of Allium sativum, the same species as culinary garlic; its pungent sulfur compounds are what you smell when a clove is crushed.
  • Lemon balm - a bushy perennial of the mint family whose crushed leaves smell strongly of lemon; a mint, not a citrus.
  • Turmeric rhizome - the bright orange underground stem of a ginger-family plant of South Asia, the source of the kitchen spice.

Why a tincture

The six dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, pungent taste in which garlic and motherwort are clearly present, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Motherwort and lemon balm can cause drowsiness, so do not drive until you know how the blend affects you. If you take any medication, take this blend at least two hours apart from it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same six-herb blend is available as Heart Formula Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs. Our Heart Support Tincture is a different two-ingredient blend of garlic and reishi.

Important safety information - please read before use

Several herbs in this blend interact with heart, blood-pressure and blood-thinning medicines. Please read before use.

  • Not a substitute for treatment: this is an herbal product. If you have been diagnosed with any heart condition or high blood pressure, use it only with your doctor, and never stop or change prescribed medication on your own.
  • Heart and blood-pressure medication: hawthorn and motherwort can interact with digoxin, beta-blockers, nitrates, calcium-channel blockers, antiarrhythmics and antihypertensives, and garlic may add to their blood-pressure-lowering effect. Do not use with any of them without your doctor.
  • Blood thinners and surgery: garlic, turmeric and motherwort may slow blood clotting, while the vitamin C in rosehips may reduce the effect of warfarin. Consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - motherwort stimulates the uterus.
  • Drowsiness: motherwort and lemon balm may cause drowsiness. Do not combine with sedatives or alcohol, and do not drive until you know how the blend affects you.
  • Blood sugar: garlic may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Gallstones: do not use if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction (turmeric).
  • Thyroid: lemon balm may affect thyroid medication - consult your doctor.
  • Lithium and iron: rosehips may raise lithium levels and increase iron absorption - consult your doctor if you take either.
  • HIV medicines: garlic can reduce the effect of some HIV medicines such as saquinavir.
  • Allergies: garlic is an Allium; motherwort and lemon balm are mint-family (Lamiaceae) plants; hawthorn and rosehips are rose-family (Rosaceae) plants.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Heart Formula Tincture?
Heart Formula is a six-herb liquid blend: hawthorn berry (Crataegus laevigata), motherwort herb (Leonurus cardiaca), rosehips seed (Rosa canina), garlic bulb (Allium sativum), lemon balm leaf (Melissa officinalis) and turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. The blend brings together the red berry of the hedgerow hawthorn, a bitter mint-family herb, the seed of the wild dog rose, the kitchen garlic bulb, a lemon-scented mint and the orange turmeric rhizome; each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend interacts with common medicines and is not a replacement for any prescribed treatment.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same six herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, pungent taste in which garlic and motherwort are clearly present. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
How is Heart Formula different from Heart Support and Strong Heart? Is this hawthorn berry or leaf?
They are different blends. Heart Formula, this product, is six herbs led by hawthorn berry and motherwort. Heart Support is garlic and reishi only, and Strong Heart is hawthorn leaf and flower with goldenseal root. The hawthorn here is the berry of Crataegus laevigata, the English hawthorn, not the leaf and flower. Rosehips in this blend are the seeds of the dog rose, Rosa canina, rather than the whole fruit, and garlic is the dried bulb of the same species as culinary garlic. All six herbs are also available as single extracts.
How do I use Heart Formula Tincture?
