Cordyceps (Cordyceps Militaris) consists of two parts: sclerotia and stroma. The fungus propagates by spores, which, like a homing weapon, “shoot” only when a caterpillar of a butterfly creeps past. Adhered to the insect, the spores dissolve the skin and penetrate the body, where they remain at rest until the caterpillar begins to bury itself in the ground for pupation on the eve of winter. The stroma of Cordyceps is dark brown or black, less often yellow. A club-shaped or spindle-shaped granular head is clearly visible on a slender, bare, longitudinally furrowed or ribbed leg of the mushroom.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Cordyceps Extract
What is Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) mushroom extract?
Cordyceps is a fungus valued in traditional Asian herbalism, and our product is the species Cordyceps militaris - a bright orange, club-shaped mushroom that is grown under cultivation. The part used here is the mushroom, the fruiting body. Cordyceps militaris is notable for naturally containing a compound called cordycepin, along with polysaccharides. It is a different species from the wild Cordyceps sinensis, which we offer as a separate product, and because militaris can be cultivated sustainably, it has become a widely used alternative. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. This is a whole-mushroom liquid extract that carries the mushroom's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cordyceps militaris mushroom; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the mushroom's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
What is the difference between Cordyceps militaris and Cordyceps sinensis?
This is the key distinction to understand, and we offer both as separate products. This product is Cordyceps militaris, a bright orange cordyceps that is grown under cultivation on a substrate. It is a different species from Cordyceps sinensis (now also classified as Ophiocordyceps sinensis), the famous wild "caterpillar fungus" that grows on insect larvae high in the Himalayan plateau and is rare and very expensive; we offer that one separately. Because Cordyceps militaris can be cultivated sustainably and is notably rich in cordycepin, it has become the widely used, practical alternative to the wild sinensis. So while both are called cordyceps, they are different species - and this product is the cultivated militaris. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Cordyceps militaris) and part (mushroom fruiting body) so there is no confusion with Cordyceps sinensis, the caterpillar fungus.
How do I use Cordyceps liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Cordyceps extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Cordyceps is not right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children, should avoid cordyceps. Because cordyceps can interact with the immune system, use caution and speak with your practitioner first if you have an autoimmune condition or take medication that suppresses the immune system. It may also affect blood sugar and may have a blood-thinning effect, so use caution if you have diabetes or take an anticoagulant, and stop using it before any surgery. If you are allergic to mushrooms, do not use it. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Cordyceps (Cordyceps Militaris) Mushroom is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
