Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) Chip - Topical Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) prepared from the dried wood chip of Eastern Red Cedar - Juniperus virginiana, an aromatic North American tree of the cypress family (Cupressaceae); despite the name, it is botanically a juniper, not a true cedar. This product is for external (topical / aromatic) use only.

  • Botanical name: Juniperus virginiana L. (Cupressaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried wood chip
  • Also known as: Eastern Red Cedar, Red Cedar, Virginia Juniper, Aromatic Cedar, Pencil Cedar
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture - for external use only
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

Used externally for its aromatic character and general skin comfort. This is Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), different from Western Red Cedar and Cedar (Thuja plicata), Thuja (Thuja occidentalis), and Juniper berry (Juniperus communis), which we carry separately. It is rich in aromatic sesquiterpenes such as cedrol; please read the safety information below before use.

External-use safety information - please read before use

Please read these cautions before using Eastern Red Cedar topical extract.

  • External use only: this product is for topical and aromatic use and is not for internal use - do not swallow it. Cedarwood is rich in aromatic sesquiterpenes and can be harmful if swallowed; taken internally, cedar oil can cause serious harm, which is why we offer it strictly for external use.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: Eastern red cedar is considered unsafe in pregnancy - do not use it, even externally, if you are pregnant, and avoid it while breastfeeding.
  • Skin: apply to intact skin only - do not apply to broken, irritated, or sensitive skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may sting on sensitive skin.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Eastern Red Cedar Extract
What is Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) topical extract?
Eastern Red Cedar is the common name for Juniperus virginiana, an aromatic North American tree of the cypress family (Cupressaceae); despite the name, it is botanically a juniper, not a true cedar. This is a liquid extract of the dried wood chip FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL / AROMATIC) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This tincture is an alcohol extract, used on the skin and for its aroma. Cedarwood is rich in aromatic sesquiterpenes (such as cedrol) and can be harmful if swallowed, which is why we offer it strictly for external use. Please read the external-use safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Juniperus virginiana wood chip for external use; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead. Choose whichever suits your topical or aromatic routine. The wood inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is Eastern Red Cedar the same as Western Red Cedar, Thuja, or Juniper?
No - these names overlap but the plants differ. Eastern Red Cedar is Juniperus virginiana, a juniper. Western Red Cedar (which we also list as Cedar) is Thuja plicata, and Thuja is Thuja occidentalis - both are Thuja, not junipers. Juniper berry comes from Juniperus communis (and Juniperus monosperma), a different part and species. They all belong to the cypress family but are not interchangeable. Note also Savin (Juniperus sabina) is a separate, more toxic juniper that we do not carry. We label this page clearly as Juniperus virginiana wood chip.
How do I use Eastern Red Cedar topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to intact skin only - do not apply to broken, irritated, or sensitive skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not take it internally. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may sting on sensitive skin. Discontinue use if any irritation or reaction occurs. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Eastern Red Cedar topical safe for everyone? External-use safety information.

Cedarwood is rich in aromatic sesquiterpenes and can be harmful if swallowed - taken internally, cedar oil can cause serious harm - so keep it to external use and do not swallow it. Pregnancy and nursing: Eastern red cedar is considered unsafe in pregnancy, so do not use it, even externally, if you are pregnant, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Skin: apply to intact skin only, not to broken or irritated skin; do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops; keep away from the eyes. Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead.
