Frequently Asked Questions about Fu Pen Zi Extract
What is Fu Pen Zi / Chinese Raspberry (Rubus chingii) fruit extract?
Fu Pen Zi is the Chinese name for the fruit of Rubus chingii, a raspberry of the rose family (Rosaceae) also called Chinese raspberry, palmleaf raspberry, or East Asian raspberry; the dried fruit is known in pharmacy as Fructus Rubi. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried fruit. Chinese raspberry has been valued as a food-medicine berry in China for a very long time. It is generally regarded as safe when used sensibly, with one common-sense precaution: as a precaution it is not recommended during pregnancy, and if you are nursing or take medication please consult your practitioner. Please read the notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rubus chingii fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol; no sugar is added. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The fruit inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
Is Fu Pen Zi the same as red raspberry or blackberry?
They are cousins, not the same. Fu Pen Zi is the FRUIT of Rubus chingii (Chinese raspberry). Our red raspberry product is the LEAF of Rubus idaeus - a different species and a different part - and our blackberry products are Rubus fruticosus (leaf) and Rubus armeniacus (root). All belong to the genus Rubus in the rose family, but they are different species and different plant parts with different traditional uses. We label ours clearly as Rubus chingii fruit so it is not confused with the raspberry leaf or blackberry products.
How do I use Fu Pen Zi / Chinese Raspberry liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Fu Pen Zi right for everyone? Safety information.
Chinese raspberry fruit is generally regarded as a safe, food-familiar berry. A few sensible cautions still apply. Pregnancy and nursing: as a precaution, do not use concentrated Fu Pen Zi extract during pregnancy, and consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Medications: if you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep to sensible short-term use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
