Artichoke, Dandelion, Oregon Grape, Burdock, Corn Silk and Wormwood Herbal Blend - Gallbladder Guard Tincture
Gallbladder Guard Tincture, Artichoke Leaf, Dandelion Root, Oregon Grape Root, Burdock Root, Corn Silk, Wormwood HerbGallbladder Guard Tincture - Artichoke, Dandelion, Oregon Grape, Burdock, Corn Silk and Wormwood Herbal Blend
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of six bitter herbs extracted together in equal parts. Gallbladder Guard is the name of the blend; it is a traditional bitters-style herbal product, not a capsule. It is meant for short-term use only - please read the safety information below before use.
- Artichoke leaf - Cynara scolymus leaf (Asteraceae)
- Dandelion root - Taraxacum officinale root (Asteraceae)
- Oregon grape root - Mahonia aquifolium root (Berberidaceae; naturally contains berberine)
- Burdock root - Arctium lappa root (Asteraceae)
- Corn silk - Zea mays silk (Poaceae)
- Wormwood herb - Artemisia absinthium herb (Asteraceae; naturally contains thujone)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Artichoke leaf - the bitter leaf of the globe artichoke, a garden vegetable of the daisy family.
- Dandelion root - the taproot of the common dandelion, roasted as a coffee substitute and a classic ingredient of herbal bitters.
- Oregon grape root - the yellow root of a Pacific Northwest shrub; its color comes from berberine.
- Burdock root - the long edible taproot of greater burdock (gobo).
- Corn silk - the fine silky threads of the corn ear, a traditional herb of the Americas.
- Wormwood herb - the intensely bitter herb famous from absinthe and vermouth; it naturally contains thujone, which is why this blend is limited to short courses.
Why a tincture
The six dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method for bitters. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water.
About the bitterness and the alcohol
This is a true bitters blend - wormwood, artichoke and dandelion are among the most bitter herbs in Western herbal tradition, and the tincture tastes accordingly. Most people take the drops in a little water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small; if you need to avoid alcohol completely, choose the alcohol-free drops.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Use it as a short course only - no longer than two weeks at a time - and then take a break. If you prefer less alcohol taste, add the drops to a cup of hot water and let it stand for a few minutes. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same six-herb blend is available as Gallbladder Guard Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains six herbs, several of which carry important cautions. Please read before use.
- Gallstones and bile ducts: artichoke, dandelion, Oregon grape and wormwood increase bile flow. Do not use if you have a blocked bile duct, cholangitis or liver disease. If you have gallstones or any gallbladder condition, use it only under the supervision of your doctor.
- Duration: wormwood naturally contains thujone. Use this blend for no longer than two weeks at a time. Do not use if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use. Berberine from Oregon grape can cross the placenta and can cause jaundice in newborns; wormwood is not for use in pregnancy.
- Age: not for children or anyone under 18.
- Medication: berberine may interact with blood thinners, cyclosporine and diabetes medicines; dandelion and corn silk add to the effect of diuretics and blood-pressure medicines and may lower potassium; burdock may add to blood thinners. Consult your practitioner.
- Allergies: artichoke, dandelion, burdock and wormwood are daisy-family (Asteraceae) plants - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or chrysanthemums. Avoid corn silk if you are allergic to corn.
- Digestive: larger amounts may cause stomach upset or loose stools. Keep to the label serving.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
