Frequently Asked Questions about Wormwood Extract
What is wormwood herb extract used for?
Wormwood herb extract is a liquid herbal preparation made from the dried aerial herb of Artemisia absinthium, a strongly aromatic perennial plant native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia and naturalized across North America. This product is intended for external use only. Artemisia absinthium has one of the longest documented histories of use in Western herbal tradition, with records spanning over two thousand years. The common name "wormwood" and its traditional applications are closely tied to the herb's intensely aromatic volatile oil, which contains thujone and other terpene compounds. In traditional European folk practice, wormwood herb preparations were applied externally to the skin for topical comfort. As a liquid herbal extract, wormwood herb is used externally to support general skin comfort and well-being. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between wormwood herb drops and wormwood herb tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers wormwood herb in two liquid formats, both intended for external use only. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, providing a non-alcohol base suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol in topical preparations. The wormwood herb tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent; the alcohol base evaporates quickly upon application to the skin. Both are made from the same dried Artemisia absinthium aerial herb.
What is Artemisia absinthium?
Artemisia absinthium, commonly known as wormwood, grand wormwood, or common wormwood, is a strongly aromatic perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia and widely naturalized across North America. The plant grows to 50-150 cm in height and is immediately recognizable by its distinctive silver-grey appearance, caused by a dense covering of fine silky hairs on both stem and leaves, and by its intensely bitter, aromatic scent. Wormwood is the primary botanical ingredient historically used to flavor absinthe, the high-proof spirit, and has been cultivated and wildcrafted in Europe for centuries. Note: Artemisia absinthium (common wormwood) is a different species from Artemisia annua, commonly called sweet wormwood or qinghao, which is the source of artemisinin used in antimalarial medicine. The two plants belong to the same genus but have different chemistry, different appearance, and different traditional uses. HawaiiPharm's wormwood herb tincture is made from dried Artemisia absinthium aerial herb, not from Artemisia annua.
How do I use wormwood herb extract externally?
This product is for external use only - do not take internally. Apply the extract topically to the desired area of skin as needed. Before first use, perform a patch test: apply a small amount to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours to check for skin sensitivity. For the glycerite drops, the preparation may be applied directly or diluted in a carrier oil. For the tincture, the alcohol base evaporates quickly after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or irritated skin. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
Are there any precautions when using wormwood herb extract?
For external use only. Do not take internally. Keep away from eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or irritated skin. Perform a skin patch test before first use, as some individuals may experience skin sensitivity or irritation. If redness, rash, or irritation develops, discontinue use immediately. Do not apply to children without guidance from a healthcare provider. Avoid use during pregnancy and nursing. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family, which includes ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, and daisy. Keep out of reach of children and pets. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
