Frequently Asked Questions about Polapola Extract
What is Polapola / Mountain Knotgrass (Aerva lanata) herb extract?
Polapola is a liquid extract of the dried herb (whole plant) of Aerva lanata, of the Amaranthaceae family, traditional to Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. It is also known as polpala, mountain knotgrass, woolly flower, gorakhganja or siru poolai. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things matter for safety: it is not intended for long-term use, because prolonged use has been associated in studies with effects on the kidneys and other organs, and it should not be used in pregnancy. Despite one of its common names, "mountain knotgrass," it is a different plant from true knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare). Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Aerva lanata herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Polapola the same as knotgrass?
No. Aerva lanata is sometimes called "mountain knotgrass," but that is a common-name coincidence - it belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and is a completely different plant from true knotgrass, Polygonum aviculare, which is in the Polygonaceae family and which we sell separately as Knotgrass. Aerva lanata is also called polpala, gorakhganja and siru poolai in the traditions where it is used. One of its Sanskrit names, "pashanabheda," is shared with several unrelated stone herbs (the classic pashanabheda is actually Bergenia ligulata), so that name is not exclusive to this plant. We label ours clearly as Aerva lanata (polpala) so its identity is unambiguous.
How do I use Polapola liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use it for long, continuous periods - keep to short-term use unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Polapola right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Long-term use: Aerva lanata is not intended for long, continuous use - prolonged use has been associated in animal studies with changes to the kidney tubules, effects on other organs and on blood lipids, so keep to short-term use and do not exceed the suggested serving. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy - animal studies have shown reduced litter size, reduced pup weight and reproductive (testicular) effects in male offspring; consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Fertility: because of those reproductive findings, use caution if you are trying to conceive, particularly for men. Blood sugar: Aerva lanata may lower blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication, as the effects can add up. Diuretic effect: it can increase urine output, so use caution if you take diuretic ("water pill") medication or have an electrolyte imbalance. Do not use it to self-treat kidney, urinary or blood-sugar problems - see a qualified doctor instead. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Polapola (Aerva Lanata) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
