Frequently Asked Questions about Milk Thistle Extract
What is Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) seed extract?
Milk Thistle is a tall, spiny plant, botanically named Silybum marianum, in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to the Mediterranean and now grows widely across the world. Its most recognizable feature is its glossy green leaves marbled with distinctive white veins - a pattern that, by legend, was said to come from the milk of the Virgin Mary, which is the source of both the name "milk thistle" and the traditional name St Mary's thistle. The plant produces a purple, thistle-like flower head, and the small hard seeds it leaves behind are the part we use. Those seeds naturally contain a group of flavonolignans collectively called silymarin. Our extract is made from the dried seed and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Each batch is made from carefully sourced raw material. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Silybum marianum seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this standardized silymarin, and is it the same as blessed thistle?
No on both counts, and both points cause confusion. First, silymarin: many milk thistle products are standardized extracts concentrated to a fixed percentage (often 80%) of silymarin. Our product is different - it is a whole-seed liquid extract that preserves the seed's own natural spectrum of constituents, including its naturally occurring silymarin, rather than being concentrated to a single fixed marker level. If you are specifically looking for a standardized 80% silymarin product, that is a different type of supplement. Second, blessed thistle: despite the similar name, blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus) is a completely different plant and a different herb from milk thistle (Silybum marianum); they should not be confused. Milk thistle also goes by the traditional names St Mary's thistle, Marian thistle and blessed milk thistle. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Silybum marianum), plant part (seed) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with silymarin isolates or with blessed thistle.
How do I use Milk Thistle liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Milk Thistle extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Milk thistle is generally well tolerated, but it is not right for everyone. Because it belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae), people allergic to ragweed, daisies, marigolds or chrysanthemums may react to it and should use caution. Some people notice mild digestive upset. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
