Frequently Asked Questions about Red Clover Extract
What is Red Clover Leaf (Trifolium pratense) extract?
Red Clover is a perennial plant of the legume or pea family (Fabaceae), botanically Trifolium pratense, a familiar sight in meadows with its rounded pink-purple flower heads and three-part leaves. The part used here is the leaf. It is also known as cow clover or meadow clover. Red clover is widely grown as an agricultural cover crop and forage plant as well as being used as a herb. The plant naturally contains constituents called isoflavones and coumarins. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Trifolium pratense leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the red clover leaf or the blossom, and which clover is it?
A few clarifications that matter with clover. First, part: this product is the leaf. The red clover flower (the blossom) is also used and is offered as a separate product - in fact the blossom is the part most often associated with red clover, so if you want the flower, choose that one. Second, species: our clover is red clover, Trifolium pratense; it is different from white clover (Trifolium repens) and from crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum), which are separate plants. Third, use: red clover is also a well-known farm cover crop and forage plant - our product is the herbal leaf extract, not seed or a plant for the field or lawn. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Trifolium pratense) and plant part (leaf) so there is no confusion with the blossom, the other clovers, or the agricultural plant.
How do I use Red Clover Leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Red Clover Leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Red Clover is not right for everyone. It naturally contains isoflavones, which have estrogen-like activity, so if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, talk with your practitioner before use. It also contains coumarins and may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so use caution if you take a blood thinner or anticoagulant, or if you are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner. Do not use it during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
