Litchi (Litchi Chinensis) is an evergreen or perennial tropical tree that belongs to the Litchi genus, Sapindaceae family. It is native to China. The plant is usually about 15 m tall but sometimes it can reach up to 28 m in height. The bark is greyish-black, the leaves are about 10-25 cm long, with 2-4 pairs of leaflets. The little yellow, white or green, aromatic flowers grow in panicles that may reach up to 10-40 cm in length. The fleshy fruits can be globose, oval or heart-shaped, about 5 cm long and 4 cm wide. The skin of the fruit is quite thin, robust and red or pink-red when ripe. It can be smooth or covered with sharp bumps. The cortex is uneatable but can be easily removed. Under the cortex there is a layer of limpid, white, fragrant, sweet aril which is the edible part of the fruit. It surrounds a dark brown uneatable seed (about 1-3 cm long and 0.6-1 cm broad).*
