What is Lychee Seed / Li Zhi He (Litchi chinensis)?
Lychee is an evergreen tropical tree of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), botanically Litchi chinensis, native to southern China and reaching around fifteen metres. Its fruit has a rough red skin, a sweet translucent white aril that is the part people eat, and a single hard brown seed at the centre. This product is made from that seed - the stone, not the fruit and not the aril. In Chinese herbal tradition the seed is a herb in its own right, known as Li Zhi He, and it has a long record of traditional use. You may also see the spelling litchi, and the older botanical synonym Nephelium litchi. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-seed liquid extract, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Litchi chinensis seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the lychee fruit, and how does it differ from longan?
No - and the distinction is the whole point of this product. Lychee as most people know it is the fruit, eaten fresh, tinned or in drinks; what you eat is the white aril. Our product is the seed at the centre, which is normally discarded when the fruit is eaten. It is a separate article with its own name in Chinese herbal practice, Li Zhi He. So if you are looking for lychee flavour or the fruit itself, this is not that item. As for longan: that is a related tree in the same family, and we sell longan separately - our longan product is the peel, again a different plant part from a different species. One note on spelling: lychee and litchi are the same fruit, with lychee being the commoner spelling in English-language sources. We label the botanical name (Litchi chinensis) and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Lychee Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Take it with or after food rather than on an empty stomach, and do not exceed the suggested serving - please read the safety section below.
Is Lychee Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

Lychee seed naturally contains a compound called methylenecyclopropylglycine, or MCPG, which is present in the seed at a higher level than in the fruit pulp. MCPG interferes with the body's ability to make glucose when food is not available. For that reason, take this product with or after food, and do not take it on an empty stomach, while fasting, or when you have skipped meals. It is not suitable for children. If you take insulin or any other medication for diabetes, or if you are prone to low blood sugar for any reason, speak with your doctor before using this product. Do not use it during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
