Haliotis laevigata shell is oval, 11 to 14cm long, 8.5 to 11cm wide, and 3 to 6.5cm high. Brick-red surface is smooth, and with umbo that is above the surface, obvious growth line, spiral portion that is about 1 /3 of the shell surface, more than 30 warts, and 9 openings at the end. Main chemical constituents of abalone shells are calcium carbonate and organic matter and it still contains a small amount of magnesium, iron, silicate, phosphate, chloride and a trace amount of iodine. In terms of the calcined one, it contains calcium oxide and the organic matter is destroyed. In addition, it also contains zinc, manganese, chromium, strontium, copper and other trace elements. The inner shell has keratin with a pearl-like luster and it produces 16 kinds of amino acids after hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Shi Jue Ming Extract
What is Shi Jue Ming / Abalone Shell (Haliotis laevigata) extract?
Shi Jue Ming is the Chinese name for abalone shell - the shell of a marine mollusk, in this case the greenlip abalone, Haliotis laevigata; in pharmacy it is known as Concha Haliotidis. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the powdered shell. The shell is an animal-derived material made mostly of calcium carbonate (the same mineral as chalk) with trace minerals and shell proteins. A few notes matter: it is not for use in pregnancy, and if you have a shellfish allergy please see the question below. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Haliotis laevigata shell; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The shell material inside is the same, and the same notes apply to both.
Is this the same as oyster shell or pearl shell? And is it safe with a shellfish allergy?
Two clarifications. First, these are different animal shells, and we list them separately: Shi Jue Ming is abalone shell (Haliotis laevigata); Mu Li is oyster shell (Ostrea gigas); and Zhen Zhu Mu is pearl shell / mother-of-pearl (Pinctada margaritifera). Second, on allergy: shellfish allergy is caused by the immune system reacting to proteins in the flesh of shellfish, not the shell, so a calcium-carbonate shell material is generally considered low risk. However, because the inner shell can carry trace shell proteins, if you have a known shellfish allergy it is safest to consult your practitioner before use. This is an animal-derived product, so it is not suitable for vegans.
How do I use Shi Jue Ming / Abalone Shell liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Shi Jue Ming right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use Shi Jue Ming during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Shellfish allergy: the shell is not the same as the flesh that causes shellfish allergy, so it is generally low risk, but if you have a known shellfish allergy, consult your practitioner before use. Digestive: in traditional use it is given with caution to people with weak or cold digestion, so if you tend toward indigestion, use it carefully. Animal-derived: this is an animal product and not suitable for vegans. Medications: if you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
