Cranesbill (Geranium Maculatum) also known as Spotted Geranium, Wood Geranium, or Wild Geranium is a woodland perennial plant native to eastern North America, from southern Manitoba and southwestern Quebec south to Alabama and west to Oklahoma and South Dakota. It grows in dry to moist woods and is normally abundant when found. It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing to 60 cm tall, producing upright usually unbranched stems and flowers in spring to early summer. The leaves are palmately lobed with five or seven deeply cut lobes, 10–12.5 cm broad. The flowers are 2.5–4 cm diameter, with five rose-purple, pale or violet-purple (rarely white) petals and ten stamens. Plants go dormant in early summer after seed is ripe and dispersed.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Cranesbill Extract
What is Cranesbill (Geranium maculatum) root extract?
Cranesbill is a North American woodland perennial of the geranium family (Geraniaceae), botanically Geranium maculatum. It is also known as wild geranium, spotted geranium, American cranesbill, and alum root. The part used here is the root, or rhizome. The name cranesbill comes from the plant's long, slender, beak-like seed pods, which resemble a crane's bill. It is a true geranium, which is worth noting because the common potted "geranium" is actually a different plant (see below). The root is naturally rich in tannins. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Geranium maculatum root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as the geranium in my garden, or Heuchera alum root?
No on both counts, and the names cause real confusion. First, garden geranium: our cranesbill is Geranium maculatum, a true wild geranium. The familiar potted "geranium" grown as a houseplant or bedding plant is actually a different genus, Pelargonium, not a true geranium at all. There are also ornamental hardy Geranium cultivars grown in gardens and sold as "cranesbills" - ours is the wild American medicinal species, not those ornamentals. Second, alum root: cranesbill is nicknamed alum root because its tannins give it an astringent, alum-like quality, but a completely different plant, Heuchera (coral bells), is also called alum root. Ours is Geranium maculatum. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Geranium maculatum) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with Pelargonium, ornamental geraniums, or Heuchera.
How do I use Cranesbill liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Cranesbill extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Cranesbill root is naturally rich in tannins. In large amounts, tannins may cause stomach upset or nausea, and they can reduce the absorption of iron and of some medications, so it is best to take cranesbill apart from medications and to avoid large doses over long periods. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
