Frequently Asked Questions about Kudzu Extract
What is Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) flower?
Kudzu is a fast-growing climbing vine of the pea family (Fabaceae), botanically Pueraria lobata (also written Pueraria montana var. lobata), famous as an aggressive introduced vine in the southeastern United States. This product is made from the FLOWER, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Ge Hua. This is a flower liquid extract, offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is important to know that the flower is a different part from the kudzu ROOT (called Ge Gen), which is the more familiar medicinal part of the plant and the basis of most kudzu supplements; our product is the flower, not the root. This is a whole-flower extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pueraria lobata flower; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the flower's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below.
Is this the kudzu flower or the kudzu root, and which Pueraria is it?
Good questions, since kudzu has more than one useful part and more than one species. First, the part: our product is the kudzu FLOWER, known as Ge Hua, which is a different part from the kudzu ROOT (Ge Gen) that most kudzu supplements are made from; the root is the starchy part also used to make the Japanese arrowroot starch called kuzu. Our product is the flower extract, not the root and not the culinary starch. Second, the species: ours is Pueraria lobata (Pueraria montana var. lobata), the common kudzu vine. It is different from Pueraria mirifica, a separate Thai species (kwao krua) that is much more strongly estrogenic and marketed for other purposes; the two should not be confused. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Pueraria lobata) and plant part (flower) so there is no confusion with the root, the starch, or the other Pueraria species.
How do I use Kudzu flower liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Kudzu flower extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Kudzu flower is generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply. Kudzu naturally contains isoflavones, which are plant compounds with mild estrogen-like activity, so use caution and speak with your practitioner first if you have a hormone-sensitive condition or take hormone therapy. If you are pregnant or nursing, do not use a concentrated extract without consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner. Kudzu may lower blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication, and it may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so speak with your practitioner if you take blood-thinning medication. Because kudzu is in the pea and bean family, do not use it if you are allergic to legumes. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
