Leaves are alternate; petiole length is from 3 to 7cm; linear stipules are caducous; heart-shaped blade is often 3-lobed. Flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and without perianth; yellowish green male flowers form catkin and once again arrange into acrogenous racemose; stamens are many but in different length; female flowers arrange into spherical capitulum. Capitate infructescence is spherical, pricky, and 2.5 to 4.5cm in diameter. Capsule is with persistent calyx and style, 2-valvate, and 2-lobed each valve. Seeds are numerous, small, and flat. Flowering time is from March to April and fruit time is from September to October. Gumball tree fruits contain 28-noroleanonic acid, styracin (cinnamyl cinnamate), bornyl cinnamate, styracin epoxide, isostyracin epoxide, caryophyllene oxide, betulonic acid (liquidambronic acid, liquidambaric acid), 24-ethyl-5-cholesten-3β-ol, and so on.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Lu Lu Tong Extract
What is Lu Lu Tong / Chinese Sweetgum (Liquidambar formosana) fruit extract?
Lu Lu Tong is the Chinese name for the dried fruit of Liquidambar formosana, the Chinese or Formosan sweetgum tree (Altingiaceae family); the spiky seed-ball fruit is known in pharmacy as Fructus Liquidambaris. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of the dried fruit. It has a long history of traditional use. One safety point matters most: it is not for use in pregnancy, and it should be avoided by women with heavy menstrual bleeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, please consult your practitioner. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Liquidambar formosana fruit; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The fruit inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is this the same as American sweetgum?
No - they are related but different trees, so the botanical name matters. Our Lu Lu Tong is the fruit of Liquidambar formosana, the Chinese (or Formosan) sweetgum. American sweetgum is a different species, Liquidambar styraciflua, native to North America and the source of American storax; we do not sell that here. Both produce the familiar spiky "gumball" fruit, but they are different species with different traditional uses. We label ours clearly as Liquidambar formosana so it is not confused with the American tree.
How do I use Lu Lu Tong / Chinese Sweetgum liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Keep to short-term use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Lu Lu Tong right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use Lu Lu Tong during pregnancy - it is a blood-moving herb, which can be a risk in pregnancy - and avoid it while breastfeeding. Heavy menstrual bleeding: because it moves the blood, it is also best avoided by women who experience heavy menstrual bleeding (hypermenorrhea). Medications: if you take any medication (especially blood-thinning medication) or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep to short-term use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
