Ophiopogon is a perennial evergreen herb, which has luxuriant green linear foliage that grows thickly. It blooms in the middle of October. Flowers are lilac and racemose. Pedicels grow out from the leaf, with 10 to 20 light purple and beautiful florets each bunch. The pea-shaped fruits are bore after the flowers die. Fruits become purple or blue-black when ripe and inside there are strings of spherical monkey grass seeds. Ophiopogon bulbs contains a variety of steroidal saponins, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, flavonoids, amino acids, homoisoflavonoids, various types of polysaccharides, vitamin A-like substance, copper, zinc, iron, potassium and other ingredients.*

What is Mai Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus) root extract?

Mai Dong is a low, grass-like evergreen perennial of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae), botanically Ophiopogon japonicus. The part used here is the root - the small tubers along the roots. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is known as Mai Dong or Mai Men Dong. Interestingly, the same plant is one of the most popular ornamental groundcovers in gardens, where it is called dwarf lilyturf, mondo grass, or monkey grass - but our product is made from the medicinal root tubers, not the ornamental foliage. The root naturally contains constituents such as steroidal saponins, homoisoflavonoids, and polysaccharides. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.

What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Ophiopogon japonicus root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.

Is this the garden mondo grass, and how is it different from Liriope?

Good questions, because this plant lives a double life. Ophiopogon japonicus is one of the most widely planted ornamental groundcovers, sold in nurseries as mondo grass, dwarf lilyturf, or monkey grass for landscaping. Our product is different: it is made from the medicinal root tubers of the plant, used in herbalism as Mai Dong, not the grassy ornamental foliage you plant in the yard. There is also a look-alike to be aware of: Ophiopogon is easily confused with Liriope (big blue lilyturf), a similar groundcover, and some material sold as mai dong is actually Liriope. Ours is specifically Ophiopogon japonicus. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Ophiopogon japonicus) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with the ornamental grass or with Liriope.

How do I use Mai Dong liquid extract?
