Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) Root - Topical Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) prepared from the dried root of Soapwort - Saponaria officinalis, a plant of the pink family (Caryophyllaceae), also called Bouncing Bet or Soap Root because its saponins form a gentle natural lather. This product is for external (topical) use only.

  • Botanical name: Saponaria officinalis L. (Caryophyllaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried root
  • Also known as: Soapwort, Bouncing Bet, Soap Root, Crow Soap
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - for external use only
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

Used externally to support general skin comfort and well-being, and historically valued as a natural cleanser. This is Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), different from Soap Bark (Quillaja saponaria). It naturally contains saponins; please read the safety information below before use.

External-use safety information - please read before use

Soapwort is rich in saponins. Please read these cautions before use.

  • External use only: this product is for topical use and is not for internal use - do not swallow it. Soapwort's saponins irritate the digestive system and, in excess, can affect red blood cells, which is why we offer it strictly for external use.
  • Skin: apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Saponins may irritate sensitive skin, so do a patch test first and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications, consult your doctor before use.
  • Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Soapwort Extract
What is Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) topical extract?
Soapwort is the common name for Saponaria officinalis, a plant of the pink family (Caryophyllaceae), also called Bouncing Bet or Soap Root because its saponins form a gentle natural lather. This is a liquid extract of the dried root FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, applied to the skin. Soapwort is rich in saponins, which can irritate the digestive system and are considered unsafe to take internally, which is why we offer it strictly for external use. Please read the external-use safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Saponaria officinalis root for external use; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits your topical routine. The root inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is Soapwort the same as Soap Bark?
No - they are different plants that both make a natural lather. Soapwort is Saponaria officinalis (also called Bouncing Bet), and we use its root. Soap Bark is Quillaja saponaria, a different tree, which we do not carry. Both are rich in saponins and have been used historically for cleansing, but they are not the same plant. We label this page clearly as Saponaria officinalis root.
How do I use Soapwort topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not take it internally. Discontinue use if any irritation or reaction occurs. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Soapwort topical safe for everyone? External-use safety information.
