Known since ancient times, spikenard (Aralia racemosa) is named in the Old Testament as one of the ingredients in the incense burned in the holy temple of Jerusalem. The powdered root is cited in some Islamic traditions as the forbidden fruit Adam ate in the garden of Eden against God's wishes. In medieval Europe spikenard was part of the spice blend used in Hypocras, a sweetened wine drink. Spikenard root belongs to the same family as the ginseng root and is prized for many of the same reasons. Native to the Eastern United States as well as the mountains of northern India, China and Japan, spikenard is a fragrant plant with a pungent root.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Spikenard Extract
What is Spikenard (Aralia racemosa) root?
American Spikenard is a tall, leafy perennial native to North America, botanically Aralia racemosa, in the Araliaceae family - the same botanical family as ginseng. The part used here is the root. It is also known by folk names such as spignet and life-of-man. This is a root liquid extract, offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from carefully sourced raw material. One important clarification: American spikenard (Aralia racemosa) is a different plant from the aromatic true spikenard, or nard (Nardostachys jatamansi), which belongs to a different plant family and is the source of spikenard essential oil. This is a whole-root extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not an essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Aralia racemosa root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below.
Is this the same as true spikenard, the essential oil, or ginseng?
No, and these are worth separating. First, true spikenard: the aromatic spikenard, or nard, mentioned in ancient texts is Nardostachys jatamansi, a plant from a completely different botanical family that is used to make spikenard essential oil for perfumery and aromatherapy. Our product is American spikenard, Aralia racemosa, which shares the common name but is a different plant, and ours is a root extract taken by the drop, not an essential oil. Second, ginseng: American spikenard belongs to the same botanical family as ginseng (Araliaceae), which is a fact of botanical relationship, but it is a different plant from ginseng (Panax) and we make no claim that it acts the same way. It is also different from other Aralia relatives such as wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis). We label our product clearly by botanical name (Aralia racemosa) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with true spikenard, the essential oil, or ginseng.
How do I use Spikenard liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Spikenard extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
American Spikenard is generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated herbal extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Because spikenard is in the same family as ginseng and ivy (Araliaceae), do not use it if you are allergic to plants in that family. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
