Frequently Asked Questions about Crimson Clover Extract
What is Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum) seed extract?
Crimson clover is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Trifolium incarnatum, a bright crimson-red annual legume of the Fabaceae family, also called Italian clover or scarlet clover. It is grown widely as a cover crop and as forage, and its sprouts are edible. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum), a different plant from red clover (Trifolium pratense) and from sweet clover or melilot (Melilotus officinalis), which we sell separately; and importantly, unlike red clover - which is known for its isoflavones (plant estrogens) - crimson clover has very low to undetectable levels of those compounds, so it should not be assumed to have red clover's estrogen-related properties. Crimson clover is a gentle, food-and-forage plant; please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Trifolium incarnatum seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is crimson clover the same as red clover or sweet clover?
No - several "clovers" are easy to mix up, and the difference matters here. Crimson clover is Trifolium incarnatum (Italian or scarlet clover), a cover-crop and forage legume with very low isoflavone (plant-estrogen) content. Red clover is a different species, Trifolium pratense - it is the clover known for its high isoflavone content and its use in menopause products, and we sell it separately as red clover leaf, flower and seed. If you are looking for the isoflavone-rich "hormone" clover, that is red clover, not crimson clover. Sweet clover, or melilot, is a different plant again, Melilotus officinalis, from a separate genus, and it contains coumarin (a natural compound with blood-thinning associations). And white clover is Trifolium repens. We label ours clearly as crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum), the seed, so it is not confused with red clover, sweet clover or white clover.
How do I use Crimson Clover liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Crimson Clover right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Crimson clover is a gentle food-and-forage legume with a good general safety record, but a few sensible cautions apply to a concentrated extract. Isoflavones: unlike red clover, crimson clover has very low plant-estrogen content, so it should not be relied on for hormone-related effects; and it is not a substitute for medical care for menopause, hormonal, cardiovascular or any other condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Allergy: it is a legume (Fabaceae), so avoid it if you are sensitive to legumes. Pregnancy and nursing: because a concentrated extract is stronger than the plant, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
