Unveiling the Natural Powers of Fennel Seed

Fennel liquid extract bottle

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is an aromatic Mediterranean plant of the carrot family; its dried seeds are a familiar culinary spice with a sweet, anise-like flavor. This is a whole-seed liquid extract of the seed - not the fennel bulb vegetable, and different from "fennel flower" (Nigella sativa) and from anise.

Rich in volatile oils: Fennel seeds naturally contain volatile oils, including anethole, the aromatic compound behind fennel's characteristic flavor and scent.

A whole-seed extract: carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound.

Ingredients: Fennel seed, vegetable glycerin, purified water. Alcohol-free. Gluten-free. No added sugar.

How to use: Shake well. Add 20-30 drops to 2 oz of water, tea, or any unflavored beverage, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner.

The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

Please note: 32 oz jars may contain some plant material inside!
We do not accept returns on 15x4 oz, 32 oz, 2x32 oz, 64 oz, 2 gal options.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fennel Extract
What is Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare)?
Fennel is an aromatic plant of the carrot family (Apiaceae), botanically Foeniculum vulgare, originally from the Mediterranean and now grown widely. Its dried seeds - technically small fruits - are a familiar culinary spice with a sweet, anise-like flavor, used in cooking and baking around the world. There are two main types: sweet fennel (var. dulce) and bitter fennel (var. vulgare). The part used here is the seed. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material, and the seeds naturally contain anethole, the aromatic compound behind fennel's flavor. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Foeniculum vulgare seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is fennel seed the same as fennel bulb, fennel flower, or anise?
No - several fennel-related names get mixed up, so here is the clarification. First, our product is the fennel seed, which is different from the fennel bulb (Florence fennel), the crisp white vegetable eaten as food; both come from fennel, but they are different parts and ours is the seed. Second, "fennel flower" is a common name for a completely different plant, Nigella sativa (also called black cumin or black seed) - our product is not that. Third, fennel tastes similar to anise (Pimpinella anisum) and to dill because they share aromatic compounds, but they are different plants. There are also unrelated plants called "dog fennel" and "giant fennel" (Ferula) that are not culinary fennel. Our product is specifically the seed of Foeniculum vulgare, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Fennel Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Fennel Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Fennel is a common culinary plant, but the concentrated extract is not right for everyone. Fennel contains naturally occurring compounds (such as anethole and estragole) and has mild estrogen-like activity, so it is best avoided during pregnancy and by anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition unless a healthcare provider advises otherwise. Do not give it to infants. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
