Frequently Asked Questions about Gynostemma Extract
What is Gynostemma (jiaogulan) leaf extract?
Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a climbing vine in the gourd and cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae), best known by its Chinese name jiaogulan, which means roughly "twisting-vine herb." It grows in the mountains of southern China and other parts of Asia, where its mild, sweet-tasting leaves have long been brewed as a daily tea; in the Guizhou highlands, where people traditionally drank it, it earned the folk nickname "herb of immortality." It is also called southern ginseng, a nickname that reflects its traditional role rather than its botany - it is not a true ginseng. Our product is made from the dried leaf and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Each batch is made from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, including its naturally occurring gypenosides, rather than an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild, sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is jiaogulan the same as ginseng, and is this a tea?
Two useful clarifications. First, ginseng: jiaogulan is often nicknamed "southern ginseng" because its leaves contain saponins called gypenosides that are chemically similar to the ginsenosides found in true ginseng. However, jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) belongs to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae), while true ginseng belongs to the genus Panax in a completely different plant family - so despite the nickname, they are not the same plant. Second, format: jiaogulan is famous as a tea, brewed from the dried leaves and drunk by the cup. Our product is different - it is a concentrated liquid extract of the same leaf that you take by the drop, diluted in water, tea or juice. The names jiaogulan, gynostemma and southern ginseng all refer to the same plant. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), plant part (leaf) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with true ginseng or with jiaogulan tea.
How do I use Gynostemma liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Gynostemma extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Gynostemma is not appropriate for everyone. Its natural gypenosides may affect blood sugar, so use caution and talk with your practitioner if you take medication for blood sugar. Because it may influence immune activity, those with an autoimmune condition or taking immunosuppressant medication should also seek advice first. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing without medical guidance. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Gynostemma (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
