Important safety information - please read before use

Hepatica is a buttercup-family (Ranunculaceae) plant and contains a natural irritant - a few cautions are important.

  • Protoanemonin: Hepatica naturally contains protoanemonin, a known irritant that is strongest in the fresh plant. Do NOT use the fresh plant internally - fresh buttercup-family material can irritate the mouth, stomach and mucous membranes (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain) and can blister the skin on contact.
  • Dried herb: drying greatly reduces it (protoanemonin turns into the milder anemonin), which is why this product uses the dried herb - even so, do not exceed the suggested serving.
  • High doses: large amounts may irritate the kidneys and urinary tract - keep to the serving.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and do not give it to infants or young children.
  • If you are prone to skin or mucous-membrane irritation or have plant allergies, be cautious. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liverwort Extract
What is Liverwort (Hepatica americana) herb extract?
Liverwort here is a liquid extract of the dried herb of Hepatica americana, American liverleaf, a low woodland flowering plant of the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family. Its three-lobed leaf reminded old herbalists of the shape of the liver, and by the old doctrine of signatures the plant picked up the folk names liverwort, liver-leaf and kidneywort - names only, from which we make no health claims. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things matter here. First, this is the flowering liverleaf (Hepatica americana), which is a completely different organism from the true liverworts - the small moss-like plants such as Radula marginata that we sell separately, and other Marchantiophyta. Second, Hepatica is a buttercup-family plant that naturally contains an irritant compound (protoanemonin), strongest in the fresh plant and much reduced by drying, so please read the safety notes below and never use the fresh plant internally.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hepatica americana herb; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as the moss liverwort (Radula) or garden hepatica?
No - the name liverwort is shared by very different plants, so it helps to be clear. This product is Hepatica americana, a flowering plant of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), also called American liverleaf. The true liverworts are something else entirely: they are small, moss-like non-vascular plants (Marchantiophyta), and one of them, Radula marginata, we sell separately as a different Liverwort product - it is a completely different organism, not a flowering plant. Garden hepaticas (often Hepatica nobilis, the European liverleaf) are grown as ornamentals for their spring flowers. Note also that Hepatica is sometimes now classified within the genus Anemone (as Anemone americana or Anemone hepatica), and that European material may be the closely related Hepatica nobilis. We label ours clearly as Hepatica americana (American liverleaf) so it is not confused with the moss liverworts or with garden hepatica.
How do I use Liverwort (Hepatica) liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving, and never use the fresh plant. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Because this is a buttercup-family plant, please read the safety information below carefully before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Liverwort right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Hepatica (liverleaf) belongs to the Ranunculaceae, the buttercup family, and naturally contains a compound called protoanemonin that is a known irritant. It is strongest in the fresh plant, which should NOT be used internally - fresh buttercup-family material can irritate the mouth, stomach and mucous membranes and cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain, and can blister the skin on contact. Drying greatly reduces it (protoanemonin turns into the milder anemonin), which is why this product uses the dried herb; even so, do not exceed the suggested serving, as high doses may irritate the kidneys and urinary tract. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing, and do not give it to infants or young children. If you are prone to skin or mucous-membrane irritation or have known plant allergies, be cautious. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
