Kigelia Bark (Kigelia Africana) Sausage Tree Liquid Extract Tincture

Highest-strength liquid extract from the dried bark of Kigelia africana (synonym Kigelia pinnata), the African sausage tree, prepared by classic conventional extraction.

  • Main ingredient: Kigelia (Kigelia africana) dried bark. Origin: Hawaii (cultivated).
  • Menstruum: organic alcohol (48% by volume), vegetable glycerin, crystal clear water.
  • GLUTEN FREE.
  • The bark naturally contains iridoids and naphthoquinones - active constituents; please see the safety notice below.
  • A whole-bark liquid extract, distinct from our Kigelia Fruit and Kigelia Seed extracts.

Botanical Identity

Kigelia africana (synonym Kigelia pinnata) is a tree of the family Bignoniaceae native to Africa, popularly called the "sausage tree" for its large, heavy, sausage-shaped fruits. This product is made from the tree's BARK. The kigelia tree yields several parts that we offer as separate products - bark, seed and fruit - and they are not interchangeable; the kigelia used in skincare is usually the fruit, which is a different product. This is the whole-bark extract of Kigelia africana.

Important Safety Information - Please Read Before Use

Kigelia bark contains naturally active constituents (iridoids and naphthoquinones), and the sausage tree's fresh, raw fruit is known to be poisonous. Use kigelia only in small amounts, do not exceed the suggested serving, and use it under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. It is not intended for self-treatment or long-term use.

  • Start with a small amount. Begin with about 10 drops rather than a full dropper; a larger dose may cause stomach upset.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • May interact with medications. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult your physician before use.
  • Not for children. Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
  • This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume; excessive consumption may impair your ability to drive or operate heavy equipment. Store in a cool, dry place.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Begin with about 10 drops (do not start at a full 20-drop dropper) in 2 oz of water, only in small amounts and as directed by a qualified practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kigelia Extract
What is Kigelia (Kigelia africana) bark extract?
Kigelia is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Kigelia africana, an African tree of the family Bignoniaceae popularly known as the "sausage tree" for its large, heavy, sausage-shaped fruits (the botanical synonym is Kigelia pinnata). Our product is made specifically from the BARK. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-bark liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, including iridoids and naphthoquinones, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is cultivated in Hawaii and each batch is gluten free. Because kigelia bark contains naturally active constituents and the tree's fresh fruit is known to be toxic, please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Kigelia africana bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the bark, the fruit, or the seed of kigelia?
This is the BARK. The kigelia tree yields several different parts, and we offer them as separate products: this Kigelia Bark extract, a Kigelia Seed extract, and a Kigelia Fruit extract. They come from the same species, Kigelia africana, but from different plant parts, and they are not interchangeable. When people mention kigelia in skincare, they are usually talking about the FRUIT; if that is what you are looking for, please see our Kigelia Fruit product. This page is specifically the bark extract. We label each kigelia product by plant part clearly so there is no confusion between the bark, the seed and the fruit.
How do I use Kigelia bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Start low: begin with about 10 drops in 2 oz of water rather than a full dropper, and do not exceed the suggested serving, as some people find a larger amount can upset the stomach. Use only as directed by a qualified practitioner - see the safety notes, as kigelia contains naturally active constituents. Because this is an alcohol tincture, add it to a little water. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Kigelia bark extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Kigelia should be used carefully and in small amounts. The bark contains iridoids and naphthoquinones, naturally active compounds, and the tree's fresh, raw fruit is known to be poisonous; studies also report toxic effects from bark extracts. For that reason, begin with a small amount, do not exceed the suggested serving, and use only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner - it is not intended for self-treatment or long-term use. A larger dose may cause stomach upset. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
