Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is a flowering plant in the same family as carrots, parsley, and dill. Its dark green leaves resemble cilantro, while the stalks resemble celery. The herb is sweeter but stronger than celery. Brought from Europe as both a food and as a medicinal, it now grows wild in the United States in New England, the Great Lakes states, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. For centuries, it has been thought of as a good ingredient to add to love potions.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Lovage Extract
What is Lovage (Levisticum officinale) leaf extract?
Lovage is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Levisticum officinale, a tall aromatic plant of the Apiaceae (carrot) family, related to celery, parsley and dill; the leaves have a warm, celery-like flavor and have long been used as a kitchen herb. The name lovage comes from an old form of "love-ache" (ache being an old word for parsley), not from the word love. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from leaf responsibly sourced from Bulgaria and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lovage leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
How is Lovage leaf different from Lovage root, Szechuan Lovage or Osha?
Our Lovage Leaf and our Lovage Root are the same plant, Levisticum officinale, but different parts - this is the leaf. Szechuan Lovage is a different plant, Ligusticum striatum (known in Chinese as Chuan Xiong), and Osha is Ligusticum porteri - both are related members of the carrot family but different genera. We label each by its botanical name and part.
How do I use Lovage leaf liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Lovage right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Lovage naturally contains furocoumarins, which can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid strong sun or tanning beds while using it. It is a strong diuretic (water-promoting) herb, so do NOT use it if you have a kidney disorder, reduced kidney function, or inflammation of the kidneys or urinary tract, and use caution if you take a diuretic (water pill) medication. Because it contains coumarins, talk to your practitioner first if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin. Do NOT use during pregnancy, as it may stimulate the uterus. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
