Frequently Asked Questions about Lu Gen Extract
What is Lu Gen (Phragmites) reed rhizome extract?
Lu Gen is the traditional Chinese name for the rhizome of the common reed, a tall wetland grass in the family Poaceae. Its botanical name is Phragmites communis, now more commonly accepted as Phragmites australis. The reed grows 1 to 3 meters high along riverbanks, marshes and wetlands across much of the world, and the part used in traditional Chinese herbalism is the underground rhizome (often labeled as the root). Our extract is made from that rhizome and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Each batch is made from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, such as its polysaccharides, rather than an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Phragmites reed rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the rhizome's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as the invasive common reed?
It is the same plant species, but a very different context. Phragmites australis (also written Phragmites communis), the common reed, is widely known as an aggressive invasive grass that spreads through wetlands, and most online information about "phragmites" or "common reed" concerns identifying or removing it from marshes. Our product is not about that: it is the traditional Chinese herb Lu Gen, made from the reed's rhizome and prepared as a liquid extract. In other words, the same reed that is managed as a wetland plant also has a long history as a herb under the name Lu Gen. We label our product clearly by its TCM name (Lu Gen), botanical name (Phragmites communis / australis) and plant part (rhizome) so there is no confusion with reed-removal or ornamental-grass information.
How do I use Lu Gen liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Lu Gen extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Lu Gen is generally considered a mild herb, but it is not right for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Lu Gen (Phragmites Communis) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
