Frequently Asked Questions about Meadowsweet Extract
What is Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) leaf extract?
Meadowsweet is a fragrant perennial wildflower of the rose family (Rosaceae), botanically named Filipendula ulmaria. It grows in damp meadows and along streams across Europe and western Asia, carrying frothy clusters of creamy-white, sweetly scented flowers. It was once classified in the genus Spiraea (as Spiraea ulmaria) - a detail with a famous footnote: that old genus name is the origin of the word "aspirin." The plant is also known by the old names queen of the meadow and meadwort, the latter because it was traditionally used to flavor mead and other drinks. Our extract is made from the dried leaf and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. It naturally contains salicin, tannins and flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol. Each batch is made from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Filipendula ulmaria leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Why is meadowsweet linked to aspirin, and is it the same as gravel root?
Two points of interest and clarification. First, the aspirin link is purely a naming story: meadowsweet was once placed in the genus Spiraea, and when a related compound was developed into a medicine, the name "aspirin" was coined partly from Spiraea. That is a historical footnote about a word - it does not mean meadowsweet is aspirin or a substitute for it. Second, names: meadowsweet is sometimes called "queen of the meadow," but that same nickname is also used for a completely different plant, gravel root (Eupatorium or Eutrochium purpureum). Our product is specifically Filipendula ulmaria, meadowsweet, not gravel root. It is also different from the ornamental meadowsweet plants grown in gardens. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Filipendula ulmaria) and plant part (leaf) so there is no confusion.
How do I use Meadowsweet liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults dilute the extract in 2 oz of water or juice and take it as directed on the label, or as advised by your practitioner. Use the tincture or the alcohol-free glycerite as directed. Drink the entire contents. Follow the label serving size and do not exceed it.
Is Meadowsweet extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Meadowsweet naturally contains salicin and other salicylate compounds, so some cautions are important. Do not use it if you are sensitive or allergic to aspirin or to salicylate-containing products. Because salicylates are best avoided by children and teenagers - especially during or after a viral illness - do not give meadowsweet to children. Use caution if you have asthma, as some people are more sensitive to salicylates. Do not use during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication - including blood thinners or aspirin - or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Meadowsweet (Filipendula Ulmaria) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
