Menopause Care Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts: a North American woodland root, a European pasture flower and the steamed root of Asian ginseng. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - several of its ingredients carry serious cautions, so please read the safety information below before use.

  • Black cohosh, root - Actaea racemosa root (syn. Cimicifuga racemosa; Ranunculaceae)
  • Red clover, flower - Trifolium pratense flower (Fabaceae)
  • Red ginseng, root - Panax ginseng steamed root (Araliaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (black cohosh from the USA). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Black cohosh - a tall plant of the buttercup family from the hardwood forests of eastern North America, with slender spikes of white flowers; the dark, knotted root is used. Most of the world's supply is grown and gathered in the United States and Canada.
  • Red clover - the round pink-purple blossoms of the common pasture clover, naturalized across North America; the flower head is used. It is rich in isoflavones, which is why the safety note mentions hormone-sensitive conditions.
  • Red ginseng - the root of Asian ginseng, steamed and dried by a traditional Korean method that turns it reddish-brown; the same species as white ginseng, differently prepared.

Why a tincture

The three dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, earthy taste softened by the sweetness of red clover, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Red ginseng can be mildly stimulating, so take the blend earlier in the day. Do not use it for more than six months at a time without talking to your practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as Menopause Care Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains black cohosh, and all three of its herbs have hormone-related cautions. Please read before use.

  • Liver: cases of liver injury have been reported with black cohosh products, some of them serious. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual tiredness or abdominal pain. Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: do not use if you have or have had breast, uterine or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or fibroids, or take hormone therapy. Red clover and ginseng have estrogen-like activity, and black cohosh is not recommended in these conditions.
  • Blood thinners: red clover may add to the effect of blood thinners, while ginseng may reduce the effect of warfarin. Consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Blood sugar: ginseng may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Antidepressants: do not combine ginseng with MAOI antidepressants such as phenelzine.
  • Aspirin: avoid black cohosh if you are sensitive to aspirin or salicylates.
  • Blood pressure and sleep: use caution if you have high blood pressure; ginseng may cause sleeplessness if taken late in the day.
  • See a doctor: menopausal symptoms should be discussed with your doctor, and this blend must not replace any prescribed treatment.
  • Duration: do not use for more than six months at a time without talking to your practitioner.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Menopause Care Tincture?
Menopause Care is a three-herb liquid blend: black cohosh root (Actaea racemosa, also listed as Cimicifuga racemosa), red clover flower (Trifolium pratense) and red ginseng root (steamed Panax ginseng), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Black cohosh is a woodland root of eastern North America, red clover the common pasture flower, and red ginseng the steamed root of the Asian ginseng; all three are also sold on their own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, earthy taste with the sweetness of red clover. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What is red ginseng? Is black cohosh the same as blue cohosh?
Red ginseng is the root of Asian ginseng, Panax ginseng, that has been steamed and dried; the steaming turns the root reddish-brown and is a traditional Korean and Chinese method of preparation. It is the same species as white ginseng, differently processed, and a different plant from American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, formerly Cimicifuga racemosa) is a tall woodland plant of the buttercup family with white flower spikes; it is not related to blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides), a different plant with a different safety profile, which is not in this blend. The red clover here is the flower head, not the leaf.
