Myrtle (Myrtus communis) - Leaf, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried leaf of Myrtus communis, the true or common myrtle - an aromatic evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family, native to the Mediterranean, whose leaves have a fragrant, resinous scent.

  • Botanical name: Myrtus communis L. (true / common / sweet myrtle; Myrtaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried leaf
  • Also known as: common myrtle, true myrtle, sweet myrtle
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Leaf responsibly sourced from Morocco; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is true myrtle (Myrtus communis). The name "myrtle" is shared by several unrelated plants: it is not crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa, which we sell as Banaba), not wax myrtle or bayberry (Myrica cerifera), and not creeping myrtle or periwinkle (Vinca or Catharanthus). Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Myrtle leaf is rich in aromatic essential-oil compounds, including eucalyptol (1,8-cineole). A few cautions are important.

  • Do not exceed the suggested serving - myrtle is a strongly aromatic herb.
  • Babies and young children: because of the eucalyptol content, do not apply it near the face or nose of babies or young children.
  • Asthma: use with caution if you have asthma.
  • Blood sugar: myrtle may lower blood sugar - if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy; if nursing, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first.
  • If you take any medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Myrtle Extract
What is Myrtle (Myrtus communis) leaf extract?
Myrtle is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Myrtus communis, the true or common myrtle - an aromatic evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family, native to the Mediterranean, whose leaves have a fragrant, resinous scent. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from leaf responsibly sourced from Morocco and prepared in the USA. Myrtle leaf is naturally rich in aromatic essential-oil compounds, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Myrtle leaf; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as crape myrtle, wax myrtle or creeping myrtle?
No. The name myrtle is shared by several unrelated plants. Ours is the true or common myrtle, Myrtus communis. It is not crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa, which we sell as Banaba), not wax myrtle or bayberry (Myrica cerifera), and not creeping myrtle or periwinkle (Vinca or Catharanthus). We label ours clearly by its botanical name, Myrtus communis, so it is not confused with those other plants.
How do I use Myrtle leaf liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste and can be added to a cool drink. Because myrtle is a strongly aromatic herb, do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is Myrtle right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Myrtle leaf is rich in aromatic essential-oil compounds, including eucalyptol (1,8-cineole). Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the eucalyptol content, do not apply it near the face or nose of babies or young children, and use caution if you have asthma. Myrtle may lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. Do NOT use during pregnancy; if you are nursing or take any medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
