They are marine animals with a leathery skin and an elongated body containing a single, branched gonad. Sea cucumbers are found on the sea floor worldwide. The harvested product is variously referred to as trepang, bêche-de-mer or balate. Sea cucumbers serve a useful role in the marine ecosystem as they help recycle nutrients, breaking down detritus and other organic matter after which bacteria can continue the degradation process.*

Glycerites can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some glycerites are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

What is Sea Cucumber (Holothuria atra)?
Sea cucumber is a marine animal - not a plant or a vegetable. It is an echinoderm, in the same broad group as sea stars and sea urchins, and it lives on the sea floor. Our product is made from Holothuria atra, known as the black sea cucumber or lollyfish. Sea cucumbers have long been eaten as a delicacy in Asian cuisine (where dried sea cucumber is called trepang or beche-de-mer), and in traditional Chinese herbalism the animal is known as hai shen, sometimes translated as "sea ginseng." The part used here is the whole animal, dried. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-body liquid extract that carries the animal's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by species and part used.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Holothuria atra sea cucumber; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the sea cucumber's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this a vegetable, and which species is it?
Two clarifications. First, despite the name, sea cucumber is not the garden cucumber (Cucumis sativus) or any vegetable - it is a marine animal that simply has a cucumber-like shape. Second, there are many species of sea cucumber. Ours is specifically Holothuria atra, the black sea cucumber (lollyfish). Other species include Apostichopus japonicus, the prized Japanese sea cucumber often used in cooking, and various others; they are related but not the same. Our product is also different from the dried sea cucumber sold as seafood for cooking - ours is a concentrated liquid extract you take by the drop. We label our product clearly by species (Holothuria atra) and part (whole) so there is no confusion with the vegetable, with other species, or with the culinary seafood.
How do I use Sea Cucumber liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Sea Cucumber extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Sea cucumber is a marine animal, so one caution is especially important: if you have a seafood or shellfish allergy, do not use this product, as allergic cross-reactions are possible. Sea cucumber may also have a mild blood-thinning effect, so use caution if you take blood-thinning medication or are preparing for surgery, and consult your doctor first. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
