Senna grows natively in upper Egypt, especially in the Nubian region, and near Khartoum (Sudan), where it is cultivated commercially. It is also grown elsewhere, notably in India and Somalia. Senna contains anthraquinones, including dianthrone glycosides (1.5% to 3%), sennosides A and B (rhein dianthrones), and sennosides C and D (rhein aloe-emodin heterodianthrones). Numerous minor sennosides have been identified. The plant also contains free anthroquinones in small amounts including rhein, aloe-emodin, chrysophanol, and their glycosides. Senna pods also contain the same rhein dianthrone glycosides as the leaves. Carbohydrates in the plant include 2% polysaccharides and approximately 10% mucilage consisting of galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, and galacturonic acid. Other carbohydrates include mannose, fructose, glucose, pinitol, and sucrose. Flavonols present include isorhamnetin and kaempferol. Glycosides 6-hydroxymusizin and tinnevellin are also found. Other constituents in senna include chrysophanic acid, salicylic acid, saponin, resin, mannitol, sodium potassium tartrate, and trace amounts of volatile oil.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Senna Extract
What is Senna (Senna alexandrina) leaf extract?
Senna is a small flowering shrub in the legume family (Fabaceae), botanically named Senna alexandrina and also widely known by the older names Cassia angustifolia and Cassia acutifolia. It is often called Alexandrian senna, after the Egyptian port through which it was historically traded, and it is native to the Nile region and the Arabian Peninsula. The part used is the dried leaflet, which naturally contains a group of compounds called anthraquinones, of which the best known are the sennosides. Our product is made from the dried leaf and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. Each batch is made from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Senna alexandrina leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as sennosides, Senokot, or senna tea?
No - these are different things. Sennosides are the isolated active compounds standardized into some products; our extract is instead a whole-leaf preparation that preserves the plant's own natural spectrum of constituents rather than being concentrated to a fixed sennoside level. Senokot and similar names are branded over-the-counter products; ours is a herbal liquid extract of the whole leaf, not a branded OTC item. And senna tea is the dried leaf brewed as a beverage; our product is a concentrated liquid extract taken by the drop, diluted in water, tea or juice. On names, Senna alexandrina, Cassia angustifolia and Cassia acutifolia all refer to the same plant. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Senna alexandrina), plant part (leaf) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with isolated sennosides, branded products, or tea.
How do I use Senna leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to the amount on the label, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and do not use for long periods. Drink the entire contents.
Is Senna leaf extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Senna leaf naturally contains stimulant anthraquinone compounds, so it is intended only for short-term use - do not use it for more than about a week unless directed by a healthcare practitioner, as prolonged use is not advisable. Do not use senna if you have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or any undiagnosed digestive symptoms, or if you have an intestinal blockage, inflammatory bowel disease, or appendicitis. Because it can affect fluid and potassium balance, use caution and seek medical advice if you take diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids, or medications affected by potassium levels. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing, and do not give to children without medical advice. Stop use and consult your practitioner if you experience abdominal pain or diarrhea, or any adverse reaction. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the recommended dose. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Senna (Senna Alexandrina) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Drawing on decades of botanical expertise, Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each specific botanical. This proprietary approach acknowledges that every plant species possesses unique technical characteristics and varying concentrations of natural compounds across harvests.

For Senna (Senna Alexandrina) Dry Leaf Glycerite, we've perfected a precise extraction process that honors the distinctive profile of the raw material. Our master herbalists analyze each incoming batch and adjust extraction parameters accordingly, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
