What is Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) leaf extract?

Stevia is a leafy plant of the aster family (Asteraceae), botanically Stevia rebaudiana, native to South America (Paraguay and Brazil). Its leaves are naturally very sweet, which has earned it descriptive names such as sweet leaf, sugar leaf, honey leaf and candy leaf; in the Guarani language it is ka'a he'e. The part used here is the leaf. Our product is a whole-leaf liquid extract offered as a botanical dietary supplement, in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. Importantly, this is a whole-leaf extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents; it is not a purified or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.

What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Stevia rebaudiana leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.

Is this the same as the stevia sweetener or steviol glycosides?

Not exactly, and the distinction is important. The stevia you see in packets and as a tabletop sweetener is made from purified steviol glycosides - refined compounds such as rebaudioside A - which are the highly concentrated sweet components isolated from the leaf. Our product is different: it is a whole-leaf extract that keeps the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents rather than being refined down to a single sweetener compound. There is also a regulatory difference: high-purity steviol glycosides are recognized for use as a food sweetener, whereas whole-leaf and crude stevia extracts are offered as dietary supplements rather than as an approved sweetener. For that reason we offer this as a botanical supplement, not as a sugar substitute. It is also different from the live stevia plant sold for gardening. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Stevia rebaudiana) and plant part (leaf) so there is no confusion.

How do I use Stevia leaf liquid extract?

Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
