Sweetgrass owes its sweet scent to coumarin, a natural compound with real effects, so several cautions apply.
- Blood thinning: coumarin is a natural anticoagulant and may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin or heparin. If you take blood thinners, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice. If the plant is not dried correctly, coumarin can turn into dicoumarol, an even stronger anticoagulant.
- Liver and dose: high doses of coumarin can stress the liver and, in excess, cause nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness or jaundice. Keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use.
- Pregnancy / nursing: there is not enough safety information - do NOT use it internally during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Allergy: handling or inhaling the herb may rarely cause mild skin or breathing irritation.
- Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
