Frequently Asked Questions about Turmeric Extract
What is Turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract?
Turmeric comes from Curcuma longa, a leafy tropical plant in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The part used is the rhizome - an underground stem, not a true root - which is bright golden-orange inside and is the source of the familiar warm-yellow spice used in curries and mustard. Native to South and Southeast Asia, turmeric has been grown for thousands of years and is known in Ayurveda as haldi and in English as Indian saffron. Its golden color comes from natural pigments called curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the best known. Our extract is made from the dried rhizome and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. Each batch is made from carefully sourced raw material. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Curcuma longa rhizome; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the rhizome's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as curcumin or standardized turmeric extract?
No - this is an important distinction. Curcumin supplements and "standardized" turmeric extracts (often labeled 95% curcuminoids) are concentrated to a fixed, high level of one isolated group of compounds, frequently combined with black pepper extract. Our product is different: it is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that preserves the turmeric root's own natural spectrum of constituents rather than being concentrated to a single fixed curcumin percentage. If you are specifically looking for a standardized 95% curcumin product, that is a different type of supplement. It is also different from culinary turmeric powder, which is the dried, ground spice used in cooking; our product is a liquid you take by the drop. And Curcuma longa is the true turmeric, distinct from related species such as Curcuma zedoaria. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Curcuma longa), plant part (rhizome) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with curcumin isolates or turmeric powder.
How do I use Turmeric liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Note that turmeric is a strong natural dye and can stain surfaces and fabric.
Is Turmeric extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Turmeric is widely used as a food, but concentrated turmeric is not appropriate for everyone. Do not use it if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication - including blood-thinning medication - or are scheduled for surgery, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Turmeric is a strong yellow dye and may temporarily stain the mouth or, in large amounts, tint the stool. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
