White Poplar (Populus alba) - Bark, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried bark of Populus alba, the white poplar, a member of the willow family (Salicaceae). Like willow and other poplars, its bark naturally contains salicin and populin - the salicylate compounds related to the origins of aspirin - along with tannins and flavonoids.

  • Botanical name: Populus alba L. (white poplar, silver poplar, abele; Salicaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried bark
  • Also known as: white poplar, silver poplar, abele; a salicin-bearing tree bark
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Bark responsibly sourced; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is white poplar bark (Populus alba). It is different from our Balm of Gilead (the bud of a different poplar, Populus candicans), our White Willow (the bark of a willow, Salix alba), and our Small Flower Willow (Epilobium parviflorum, a willowherb that is not a true willow). Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

White poplar bark naturally contains salicylates (aspirin-like compounds). A few cautions are important.

  • Aspirin / salicylate sensitivity: do NOT use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or other salicylates.
  • Children and teenagers: because of the salicylate content, do not give it to children or teenagers, especially during or after a viral illness (risk of Reye syndrome).
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy; consult a qualified healthcare practitioner if nursing.
  • Blood thinners / NSAIDs: if you take a blood thinner, an anticoagulant or an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner first, because effects can add up.
  • Stomach / ulcer: the bark is rich in tannins and may cause stomach upset - avoid it if you have a stomach or peptic ulcer.
  • Keep to the suggested serving and keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about White Poplar Extract
What is White Poplar (Populus alba) bark extract?
White Poplar is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Populus alba, a member of the willow family (Salicaceae). Like willow and other poplars, its bark naturally contains salicin and populin - the salicylate compounds related to the origins of aspirin - along with tannins and flavonoids. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from bark responsibly sourced and prepared in the USA. Because of its salicylate content, please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same White Poplar bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic method that yields a more concentrated extract. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is White Poplar bark different from Balm of Gilead, White Willow and Small Flower Willow?
They are related but distinct. White Poplar is Populus alba bark. Balm of Gilead is the bud of a different poplar (Populus candicans), and White Willow is the bark of a willow (Salix alba) - all three are members of the willow family and all contain salicylates, so the same safety notes apply. Small Flower Willow is different again: it is Epilobium parviflorum (willowherb), not a true willow at all. We label each by its botanical name and part so they are not confused.
How do I use White Poplar bark liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite has a mild taste and can be added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is White Poplar right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. White Poplar bark naturally contains salicylates (aspirin-like compounds). Do NOT use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or other salicylates. Because of the salicylate content, do not give it to children or teenagers, especially during or after a viral illness (risk of Reye syndrome). Do NOT use during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner if nursing. If you take a blood thinner, an anticoagulant or an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner first, because effects can add up. The bark is rich in tannins, so it may cause stomach upset - avoid it if you have a stomach or peptic ulcer, and keep to the suggested serving. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
