The yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) root is native to Peru and South America, and is a distant relative of the sunflower. Archeologists believe that the yacon probably originated in the high Andean region of Southern Peru. It is also thought to be one of the "lost crops" of the Incas, who were known to cultivate it and who considered it an important food crop. The fresh root is small and similar in appearance to a potato, and is said to taste similar to a cross between celery and Granny Smith apples.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Yacon Extract
What is Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) root extract?
Yacon is a liquid extract of the dried root of Smallanthus sonchifolius, an Andean plant of the Asteraceae (daisy) family, also called Peruvian ground apple. The sweet, crisp tuber has been eaten as a food in the Andes for centuries and is naturally rich in a soluble fiber called fructooligosaccharides (FOS). This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from root responsibly sourced from Peru and prepared in the USA. Please read the short safety note below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Yacon root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this liquid extract the same as yacon syrup?
No. Yacon syrup is a sweet food product pressed and concentrated from the fresh tubers, valued in cooking as a natural sweetener. This is a concentrated liquid herbal extract of the dried root taken by the drop, not the culinary syrup or the whole vegetable. We label ours clearly as a Smallanthus sonchifolius root extract.
How do I use Yacon liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Yacon right for everyone? Safety information.
Yacon is a food plant with a long history of safe use and is low in toxicity. A few points are worth knowing. It is naturally rich in a fermentable fiber (FOS), which in larger amounts may cause gas, bloating or loose stools in some people, so start low. If you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. It belongs to the daisy family, so avoid it if you are allergic to plants such as ragweed or chamomile. Do NOT use during pregnancy; if you are nursing or take any medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Yacon (Smallanthus Sonchifolius) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
