What is Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) root extract?
Dong Quai is a fragrant perennial plant of the carrot or parsley family (Apiaceae), botanically Angelica sinensis. The part used here is the root. It is one of the most important and widely used herbs in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is called Dang Gui; in English it is known as dong quai or Chinese angelica. It is a different plant from the European angelica (Angelica archangelica) grown in gardens. The root naturally contains constituents such as coumarins and ferulic acid. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Angelica sinensis root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Which angelica is this, and is it the same as candied angelica?
Good questions, because several plants share the name angelica. Our product is Angelica sinensis, the Chinese angelica, known as dong quai or Dang Gui. It is a different species from the European angelica, Angelica archangelica, which is the garden and culinary plant used to make candied angelica for decorating cakes and as a botanical in some liqueurs; and it is also different from other angelicas such as Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica). So although the generic word "angelica" can point to several plants, ours is specifically the Chinese one, dong quai. And our product is the herbal root extract - not the candied confection. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Angelica sinensis) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with the European angelica, the other species, or the candied angelica.
How do I use Dong Quai liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Dong Quai extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Dong Quai is not right for everyone, and a few points matter. Do not use it during pregnancy, because dong quai can stimulate the uterus. It may also have a blood-thinning effect, so use caution if you take an anticoagulant or blood thinner, and stop using it before any surgery. Dong quai can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so limit sun and UV exposure while using it. If you have a hormone-sensitive condition, talk with your practitioner before use. If you are nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. When I ordered this tincture I thought it was papaver somniferum, a sleep aid. I now understand that California poppy is a different genus. The tincture seems ok, nothing dramatic, but I guess it helps one sleep if you take the 30 drps as the instructions recommend.
