What is Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) extract?

Asafoetida extract is a dietary supplement made from dried Ferula assa-foetida (the plant part stated on our label is the dried herb powder), a large plant in the carrot family (Apiaceae) native to Central Asia and long associated with India, where the spice is known as hing. The plant is best known for its pungent gum-resin, the spice; our extract is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-plant-material liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name so it is clear this is Ferula assa-foetida, distinct from the culinary spice blends and from other plants in the genus Ferula.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Ferula assa-foetida material; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Is this the same as the cooking spice hing, and is it gluten-free?

It is the same plant, but not the same product. Culinary asafoetida - sold as hing - is the spice used in Indian cooking, and the powdered kitchen version is very often cut with wheat flour or gum to make it easier to measure, which means it can contain gluten. Our product is a concentrated liquid extract of Ferula assa-foetida, made with no wheat or added starch, so it is gluten-free. It is also worth knowing that several plants share the genus Ferula: our source is Ferula assa-foetida, the plant that yields the asafoetida resin, which is not the same as Ferula communis, the giant fennel, a different and toxic plant. And although Ferula is in the same botanical family as fennel, asafoetida is not fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). We label the product clearly by botanical name so there is no confusion between our extract, the culinary spice powder, giant fennel, and true fennel.

How do I use Asafoetida liquid extract?

Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.

Is Asafoetida extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.

As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size, even though asafoetida is widely used as a food spice. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner, and it should not be given to infants or very young children.
