Big Toe Joint Support Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three ingredients extracted together: the unfermented leaf of the tea shrub, bromelain - the enzyme concentrate of pineapple stem - and the inner bark of the Amazonian cat's claw vine. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product that contains caffeine and has several important cautions - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Green tea, leaf - Camellia sinensis leaf (Theaceae) - naturally contains caffeine
  • Bromelain - Ananas comosus stem enzyme (Bromeliaceae) - a pineapple-derived enzyme powder
  • Cat's claw, inner bark - Uncaria tomentosa inner bark (Rubiaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Green tea leaf - the young leaf of the tea shrub, picked and dried quickly without the oxidation that makes black tea; it keeps its grassy taste, its catechins and its natural caffeine.
  • Bromelain - not a herb but a group of protein-digesting enzymes concentrated from the stem of the pineapple plant and supplied as a dried powder. Because it comes from pineapple, it matters for anyone with a pineapple, latex or papain allergy.
  • Cat's claw inner bark - the inner bark of a woody vine of the Peruvian Amazon, named for the curved thorns at the base of its leaves. This is Uncaria tomentosa - a different plant from Uncaria guianensis, and unrelated to devil's claw.

Why a tincture

The three dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a grassy, bitter, slightly fruity taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and take it earlier in the day because of the caffeine. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same blend is available as Big Toe Joint Support Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Cat's claw interacts with immunosuppressants, cat's claw and bromelain affect blood clotting, and the blend contains caffeine. Please read before use.

  • Immunosuppressants and autoimmune conditions: cat's claw can stimulate the immune system. Do not use if you take immunosuppressant medicines, including after a transplant, or if you have an autoimmune condition.
  • Bleeding and surgery: cat's claw and bromelain can slow blood clotting. Do not combine with blood thinners, aspirin or NSAIDs without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Prescription medicines: cat's claw blocks the liver enzyme CYP3A4 and can raise the levels of HIV protease inhibitors, cyclosporine and some benzodiazepines; bromelain can change the absorption of antibiotics such as amoxicillin and tetracycline; green tea can reduce the absorption of nadolol, lisinopril and certain statins. Ask your pharmacist before combining.
  • Liver: concentrated green tea extracts have been linked to rare liver injury. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or stomach pain, and do not combine with other green tea extract products.
  • Caffeine: contains caffeine. It can cause sleeplessness or a rapid heartbeat; do not combine with other caffeine products, and take it earlier in the day.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Allergies: avoid if you are allergic to pineapple, latex or papain.
  • Iron: green tea reduces iron absorption. Take it apart from meals and iron supplements.
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar: cat's claw and green tea can lower them. Use caution with related medication.
  • Age and duration: not for children. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Big Toe Joint Support Tincture?
Big Toe Joint Support is a three-ingredient liquid blend: green tea leaf (Camellia sinensis), bromelain (the enzyme concentrate of pineapple stem, Ananas comosus) and cat's claw inner bark (Uncaria tomentosa), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Green tea is the unfermented leaf of the tea shrub and brings a small amount of natural caffeine; bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme powder from pineapple; cat's claw is the inner bark of a thorny vine of the Peruvian Amazon. Each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - cat's claw interacts with immunosuppressants, cat's claw and bromelain affect blood clotting, and the blend contains caffeine.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three ingredients in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a grassy, bitter, slightly fruity taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
How is this different from Uterus Support and Joint Support? What is bromelain?
Big Toe Joint Support shares bromelain and cat's claw with our Uterus Support blend, but pairs them with green tea leaf instead of vitex berry; our Joint Support blend is a different formula built on other herbs. Please choose by composition. Bromelain is not a herb but a group of protein-digesting enzymes concentrated from the stem of the pineapple plant, supplied as a dried powder and extracted here alongside the two botanicals - so people allergic to pineapple, latex or papain should avoid this blend. The cat's claw is Uncaria tomentosa, the Peruvian species, harvested as the inner bark. All three ingredients are available as single extracts.
