Frequently Asked Questions about Vetiver Extract
What is Vetiver / Khus (Chrysopogon zizanioides) root extract?
Vetiver is a liquid extract of the dried root of Chrysopogon zizanioides, an aromatic grass of the family Poaceae native to India (the older botanical name Vetiveria zizanioides is a synonym). In India it is known as khus or khus khus, and in Sanskrit the root is called Ushira. The part used is the dense, fragrant root, prized for its earthy, woody aroma. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is sourced in India and each batch is gluten free.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Chrysopogon zizanioides root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as vetiver essential oil?
No, and this is an important distinction. Vetiver essential oil is a concentrated aromatic oil distilled from the vetiver root and used in perfumery and aromatherapy - applied to the skin (diluted) or diffused for its scent, not swallowed. Our product is different: it is an ingestible liquid extract of the vetiver root, made with glycerin or alcohol and water, taken internally by the drop. It is not the essential oil and it is not intended for aromatherapy or topical use. Both come from the same fragrant vetiver root, but they are made and used in completely different ways. If you are looking for the aromatherapy oil, that is a separate type of product; what we offer here is the root liquid extract of Chrysopogon zizanioides. We label the botanical name, plant part (root) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with vetiver oil.
How do I use Vetiver root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. It has an earthy, aromatic taste. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. This is for internal use, not for application to the skin. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Vetiver root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Vetiver root is generally considered low in toxicity and is well tolerated, but a concentrated liquid extract should still be used sensibly and not taken above the suggested serving. As with any supplement, if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before internal use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
