Seasonal Pollen Protection Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts: a yellow legume root from northern China and the green leaf of the common stinging nettle. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Astragalus, root - Astragalus membranaceus root (Huang Qi) (Fabaceae)
  • Stinging nettle, leaf - Urtica dioica leaf (Urticaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (nettle from Bulgaria, astragalus from China). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Astragalus root (Huang Qi) - the long, fibrous root of a perennial legume of the grasslands of northern China and Mongolia, pale when dug and yellow when dried, which is where its Chinese name, yellow leader, comes from. It is one of the most frequently used roots in Chinese herbal tradition.
  • Stinging nettle leaf - the toothed, dark-green leaf of the hedgerow perennial found across Europe, Asia and North America. Fresh, the leaf carries fine hairs that sting on contact; dried or extracted, it no longer stings, and the young leaves have long been cooked and eaten like spinach. Ours comes from Bulgaria.

Why a tincture

The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a green, slightly sweet, earthy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as Seasonal Pollen Protection Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Both herbs in this blend have documented cautions. Please read before use.

  • Autoimmune conditions and immune-suppressing medication: astragalus may increase immune activity. Do not use if you have an autoimmune condition such as lupus, multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis, or if you take immunosuppressants, including after an organ transplant.
  • Blood thinners: nettle leaf is rich in vitamin K and may reduce the effect of warfarin. Consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Lithium and diuretics: nettle has a mild diuretic effect and may change how the body handles lithium and water pills - consult your doctor.
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar: nettle may lower both - monitor if you take medication for either.
  • Allergies: do not use if you are allergic to nettle-family (Urticaceae) plants.
  • See a doctor: this blend is not a replacement for any prescribed medication.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Seasonal Pollen Protection Tincture?
Seasonal Pollen Protection is a two-herb liquid blend: astragalus root (Astragalus membranaceus, Huang Qi) and stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Astragalus is the long yellow root of a legume from the grasslands of northern China, and stinging nettle the familiar hedgerow plant whose young leaves are cooked like spinach; both are also sold on their own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a green, slightly sweet, earthy taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this the nettle leaf or the root? What is astragalus?
This blend uses the stinging nettle leaf, the green above-ground part gathered before flowering; nettle root is a different plant part with a different traditional use and is not in this product. Once dried or extracted, the leaf no longer stings. Astragalus is the root of Astragalus membranaceus, a perennial legume of northern China and Mongolia known in Chinese herbal tradition as Huang Qi, yellow leader, for the color of the dried root. It is not the same as Sha Yuan Zi, the seed of a related species, and it is unrelated to the locoweed astragalus species of the American West. Both herbs are also available as single extracts.
