Important safety information - please read before use

Buckwheat is a food, but it is also a recognized allergen - a few cautions matter.

  • Allergy: buckwheat can cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and the hull in particular - as dust from husks and buckwheat-hull pillows - is a known trigger for asthma and allergy - do NOT use it if you are allergic to buckwheat.
  • Sunlight sensitivity: buckwheat naturally contains a compound called fagopyrin (found mainly in the green parts and less in the hull) that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight - be cautious with strong sun and stop if your skin reacts.
  • Blood thinners: buckwheat contains rutin, so talk to your practitioner if you take a blood thinner.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: ordinary food amounts are one thing, but for a concentrated extract consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first.
  • Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Buckwheat Extract
What is Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) hull extract?
Buckwheat hull extract is a liquid extract of the dried hulls - the outer husk of the buckwheat seed - of Fagopyrum esculentum, common buckwheat, a pseudocereal of the Polygonaceae family. You may see it under an older botanical name, Polygonum fagopyrum, which is a synonym for the same plant. Despite the name, buckwheat is not a wheat or a grass. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: this is the buckwheat hull (Fagopyrum esculentum), a different part from our Buckwheat Seed (the same plant) and a different plant from Jin Qiao Mai (Fagopyrum dibotrys, golden buckwheat), which we sell separately; and buckwheat is a recognized allergen - the hull in particular is used to fill pillows, and buckwheat-hull dust is a known trigger for asthma and allergy - so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Fagopyrum esculentum hull; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is the buckwheat hull the same as the buckwheat seed or Jin Qiao Mai?
No - a few buckwheat products are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Buckwheat hulls and buckwheat seed come from the same plant, Fagopyrum esculentum (common buckwheat) - the hull is the outer husk and the seed is the grain (richer in rutin and, when sprouted, in fagopyrin) - we offer them separately. You may see the hull listed under the older name Polygonum fagopyrum, which is just a synonym for Fagopyrum esculentum. Jin Qiao Mai is a different species, Fagopyrum dibotrys (golden buckwheat), and Tartary buckwheat is Fagopyrum tataricum - different plants again. We label ours clearly as buckwheat hulls (Fagopyrum esculentum) so it is not confused with the seed or with the other buckwheats.
How do I use Buckwheat hull liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because buckwheat is a recognized allergen, please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
