Frequently Asked Questions about Horse Chestnut Extract
What is horse chestnut extract used for?
Horse chestnut extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried nuts of Aesculus hippocastanum, a large deciduous tree of the family Sapindaceae native to the Balkan Peninsula and Pindus Mountains of southeastern Europe. The nuts contain a complex mixture of triterpene saponins collectively known as escin (aescin), primarily alpha-escin and beta-escin, which are the principal phytochemical constituents of the species; aesculin, a coumarin glucoside present in raw nuts and significantly reduced in commercial preparations; flavonoids including quercetin, kaempferol, and astragalin (kaempferol 3-glucoside); proanthocyanidins; tannins; and beta-sitosterol. Aesculus hippocastanum has a documented history in European folk medicine and was introduced into formal European herbalism in the eighteenth century. The nuts were used in Ottoman and Balkan traditional practices, and the dried seeds are official in several European national pharmacopoeias. As a dietary supplement, horse chestnut extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between horse chestnut tincture and glycerite?
HawaiiPharm offers Horse Chestnut in two liquid formats. The Horse Chestnut Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction. The Horse Chestnut Glycerite is an alcohol-free alternative using 60% vegetable glycerin and 40% purified water as solvents. Both formats are prepared from the same dried Aesculus hippocastanum nuts using cold maceration at a 1:3 plant-to-solvent ratio. Both are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing for each batch.
What is the botanical background of Aesculus hippocastanum?
Aesculus hippocastanum, horse chestnut, is a large deciduous tree of the family Sapindaceae - the soapberry family, which also includes maples (Acer) and lychee - native to the Balkan Peninsula and Pindus Mountains of northern Greece and Albania, and widely cultivated as an ornamental tree across temperate Europe and North America. The genus name Aesculus was the Roman Latin name for a type of field oak, applied to this genus by Linnaeus. The species epithet hippocastanum derives from the Greek hippos (horse) and kastanon (chestnut), reflecting two traditional explanations: the nuts were historically fed to horses as a veterinary remedy, and the leaf scars of the tree - formed when leaves drop in autumn - are distinctively horseshoe-shaped with seven vascular bundle scars resembling nail holes, a reliable field identification feature. The same horseshoe association appears in Ottoman Turkish, where the tree was called at kestanesi (horse chestnut). The common English name conker refers to the hard brown seed used in the traditional British children's game of the same name. Horse chestnut belongs to Sapindaceae and is unrelated to sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa, family Fagaceae); the similarity in name and appearance of the nuts is superficial.
How do I use horse chestnut liquid extract?
Adults: take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily. Shake well before each use. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Are there any precautions for using horse chestnut extract?
Horse chestnut nuts contain escin (aescin), a mixture of triterpene saponins that may potentiate the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications including warfarin, aspirin, heparin, and clopidogrel; individuals taking any such therapy should consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Horse chestnut nuts also contain aesculin, a coumarin glucoside; commercial extracts contain significantly reduced aesculin levels, but individuals with known sensitivity to coumarin-containing plants should exercise caution. Pregnant or nursing individuals should avoid use, as the safety of Aesculus hippocastanum extract during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Individuals planning surgical or dental procedures should inform their healthcare provider of all supplements being taken. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are taking any prescription medication or managing a chronic health condition. Do not exceed the suggested serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
