Frequently Asked Questions about Butternut Extract
What is Butternut (Juglans cinerea) inner bark extract?
Butternut is a liquid extract of the inner bark of Juglans cinerea, a North American tree of the walnut family (Juglandaceae) commonly known as butternut or white walnut. It is a close relative of the black walnut and English walnut. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole inner-bark liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced in the USA and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is the white walnut TREE bark and has nothing to do with butternut squash - see the questions below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Juglans cinerea inner bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this butternut squash? And how does it differ from black or English walnut?
No - and this is the most important clarification. Butternut squash is Cucurbita moschata, a cultivated vegetable of the gourd family, used in cooking. Our product is completely unrelated: it is the inner bark of the butternut TREE, Juglans cinerea, also called white walnut, a member of the walnut family. They share only the word "butternut." This extract has nothing to do with the squash and is not a food. Within the walnut family, butternut is also distinct from two other products we sell: Black Walnut is Juglans nigra (we make a leaf extract and a hull extract), and English Walnut is Juglans regia (a leaf extract). Butternut is its own species, Juglans cinerea, and this product is specifically its inner bark. We label the botanical name and plant part clearly so there is no confusion between butternut bark, butternut squash, black walnut and English walnut.
How do I use Butternut inner bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner - and see the safety notes below, as butternut bark is best used short-term rather than continuously. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Who should not use Butternut bark? Safety, sourcing and storage.
Butternut inner bark has traditionally been used as a gentle laxative, so it is best used for short periods rather than continuously, and not as an everyday supplement without the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Do NOT use it during pregnancy or while nursing. The bark contains juglone, a natural compound that can be mildly toxic in excess, so do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. A note on sourcing: the butternut tree (Juglans cinerea) is an endangered North American tree, threatened by a fungal disease called butternut canker, so we use responsibly sourced raw material rather than indiscriminate wild harvest. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
