What is Ashoka Bark (Saraca asoca) extract?
Ashoka is an evergreen tree of India, botanically Saraca asoca (also known by the synonym Saraca indica), in the legume family (Fabaceae). It is long valued in Ayurvedic tradition and admired for its bright orange-yellow flowers that turn red before wilting. The part used here is the dried bark, sourced from India. The bark naturally contains constituents such as vitamins, minerals, alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins - these are simply components of the raw material. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both taken by the drop. This is a bark liquid extract of the true ashoka, Saraca asoca. It is not the ornamental "false ashoka" tree (Polyalthia longifolia), and it is distinct from the name of the Emperor Ashoka and from compound Ayurvedic formulas. We label the botanical name (Saraca asoca) and the plant part (bark) on every page.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Saraca asoca bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the true ashoka, and how is it sourced?
Yes - this is the true ashoka, Saraca asoca (synonym Saraca indica), and we label the botanical name so it is clear. This matters because in the market ashoka bark is often adulterated or substituted with the bark of a different, look-alike tree called "false ashoka," Polyalthia longifolia (also written Monoon longifolium), which is an ornamental and a documented adulterant; our product is the genuine Saraca asoca. On sourcing: the ashoka tree is a species of conservation concern in India (listed by the IUCN as Near Threatened as of 2025, previously Vulnerable) because its bark and other parts have been heavily harvested for the herbal market. We note this so customers are aware, and we encourage responsibly sourced material. The name "ashoka" is also widely used as a personal and historical name (for example the Emperor Ashoka) and for institutions; this product is specifically the botanical Saraca asoca, the tree and its bark.
