Frequently Asked Questions about Catuaba Extract
What is Catuaba (Erythroxylum catuaba) bark?
Catuaba is a small tree native to the rainforests of Brazil, and this product is made from its bark. The botanical name on our label is Erythroxylum catuaba, in the Erythroxylaceae family. This is a bark liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. A couple of points are worth clarifying up front. First, although catuaba belongs to the same plant genus (Erythroxylum) as the coca plant, it is a different species and does not contain cocaine. Second, "catuaba" is actually a common name shared by several different Brazilian trees, so bark labeled catuaba can come from more than one plant; ours is labeled Erythroxylum catuaba. This is a whole-bark extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Erythroxylum catuaba bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Which "catuaba" is this, and is it related to coca?
Both are common questions. First, the plant: "catuaba" is a common name used in Brazil for several unrelated trees, including Erythroxylum catuaba, Trichilia catigua, and Anemopaegma arvense, so products labeled "catuaba" are not all the same plant. Our product is labeled Erythroxylum catuaba, and we identify it by botanical name so you know which one you are getting. Second, coca: the genus Erythroxylum also includes the coca plant (Erythroxylum coca), which naturally leads people to ask about a connection. Catuaba is a different species from coca, and it does not contain cocaine. Our product is also different from catuaba powder or catuaba tea, and from combination products that pair catuaba with muira puama (a separate herb). We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Catuaba liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Catuaba extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this before use. There is limited safety information for catuaba, so a cautious approach is sensible. Do not use catuaba if you are pregnant or nursing, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner first if you are considering it. Catuaba has a traditional reputation as a mild stimulant, so use caution if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, or anxiety, or if you take other stimulants, and speak with your practitioner first. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated herbal extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use if you are allergic to catuaba. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Catuaba (Erythroxylum Catuaba) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
