Mandarin (Citrus Reticulata) is a citrus tree that produces fruits similar to oranges. It is a rather small tree (not taller than 4 m) with thorns. The leaves are not big, glossy and green. The flowers can grow singly or in small groups. The fruits are oblate and become orange when they mature. Mandarins have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Mandarin Extract
What is Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) peel extract?
Mandarin is a liquid extract of the dried peel of Citrus reticulata, the mandarin orange (also called tangerine), a small citrus tree of the family Rutaceae. Our product is made from the aromatic outer peel of the fruit. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-peel liquid extract carrying the natural spectrum of the peel's aromatic constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is sourced in Thailand and each batch is gluten free. To be clear, this is the citrus fruit peel - not the color, and not "Mandarin" the language.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Citrus reticulata peel; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as Chen Pi, Mandarin seed, or other citrus?
It is closely related but worth clarifying. Chen Pi is the traditional Chinese name for dried tangerine/mandarin peel - the same species, Citrus reticulata, and the same plant part as this product; the main distinction is that true Chen Pi is aged for several years, while this is our standard dried mandarin peel. We list Chen Pi separately, so if you specifically want the aged tangerine peel, see that product. This page is also different from our Mandarin SEED extract, which comes from the same plant but a different part (the seed). And within our citrus range, mandarin peel is its own species, distinct from Lemon (Citrus limon), Orange (Citrus sinensis), Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and Lime (Citrus aurantifolia). We label each by botanical name and plant part so there is no mix-up.
How do I use Mandarin peel liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, up to a few times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It has a bright, aromatic citrus-peel flavor and blends well into tea or cool drinks. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Mandarin peel extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Mandarin peel is a common food and is generally recognized as safe, so this extract is well tolerated when used sensibly; still, do not take more than the suggested serving. Like other citrus peels, mandarin contains small amounts of compounds called furanocoumarins - though mandarins have low levels compared with lime or grapefruit. The "sun-and-skin" reaction people associate with citrus is a contact issue that happens when juice or peel gets on the skin and is then exposed to sunlight; it is not a concern from taking this liquid by mouth. Citrus can mildly interact with a few medications through liver enzymes (much less than grapefruit does), so check with your practitioner if you take medication. If you are pregnant or nursing or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
