Frequently Asked Questions about Chia Extract
What is Chia (Salvia hispanica) seed extract?
Chia is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Salvia hispanica, the chia plant - a member of the Salvia genus in the mint family (Lamiaceae), traditionally grown in Mexico and Central America. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural constituents, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. A note on what this is and is not: this is the chia SEED (Salvia hispanica), the well-known food seed, and it is a different Salvia species from Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza, a Chinese cardiovascular herb), from culinary sage (Salvia officinalis) and from any ornamental Salvia - all of which are separate. Chia is a recognized food allergen for some people, so please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Salvia hispanica seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as eating chia seeds, and how is it different from other Salvias?
Good question on both counts. This is a liquid EXTRACT of the chia seed, not whole chia seeds - so it is used by the drop, not by the spoonful, and it does not provide the bulk fiber or the whole-food nutrition you would get from eating the seeds themselves. If you want the classic whole-food chia experience, the culinary seeds are what you are after. On the botany: chia (Salvia hispanica) belongs to the large Salvia genus, which also includes Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza, used in Chinese herbalism for the heart and circulation), culinary sage (Salvia officinalis) and Shi Jian Chuan (Salvia chinensis) - all different species that we label separately. This product is specifically the chia seed.
How do I use Chia seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, especially the allergy note. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Chia right for everyone? Safety information.
Chia is a widely eaten food and is generally safe, but a few cautions apply to any concentrated chia product. First, allergy: chia is a recognized food allergen, and reactions can be serious (including, rarely, anaphylaxis with swelling or difficulty breathing) - do not use it if you are allergic to chia or seeds, and stop use and seek help if you have an allergic reaction. Chia may also gently lower blood sugar, so if you take diabetes medication, watch for low blood sugar; it has mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) activity, so use caution if you take blood thinners or are preparing for surgery; and it may lower blood pressure, so take care if you use blood-pressure medication. If you are pregnant or nursing, chia is fine as a food but consult your practitioner before using a concentrated supplement. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Chia (Salvia Hispanica) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
