Frequently Asked Questions about Chickweed Extract
What is chickweed herb extract used for?
Chickweed herb extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried above-ground parts of Stellaria media, a delicate annual herb in the family Caryophyllaceae native to Europe and one of the most widely distributed plants in temperate regions worldwide. The dried herb is a source of flavonoids including rutin (quercetin-3-O-rutinoside) and vitexin (apigenin-8-C-glucoside), C-glycosyl flavones characteristic of the species; triterpenoid saponins of the type found throughout the Caryophyllaceae family; hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives including caffeic and chlorogenic acids; and ascorbic acid and related organic acids, reflecting the plant's long history of edible use as a nutritious green. Stellaria media has been used as both a culinary plant and a traditional herbal preparation in European folk medicine for centuries, with description in Nicholas Culpeper's Complete Herbal and in the traditional herbal practices of Indigenous peoples of North America. As a dietary supplement, chickweed herb extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between chickweed drops and chickweed tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers chickweed herb in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The chickweed herb tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Stellaria media above-ground parts and are liquid herbal extracts, offering a different format from chickweed capsule and tablet preparations.
What is Stellaria media?
Stellaria media, commonly known as common chickweed or common starwort, is a delicate annual herbaceous plant in the family Caryophyllaceae native to Europe and now naturalized in virtually every temperate region of the world, including all of North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, where it grows in gardens, cultivated fields, roadsides, and disturbed areas, frequently as one of the earliest plants to emerge in late winter and early spring. The plant grows 5-40 cm tall with weak, sprawling stems bearing a single distinctive longitudinal line of fine hairs that alternates from one side to the other at each node, a reliable diagnostic feature that distinguishes Stellaria media from closely related species. The opposite leaves are ovate with pointed tips; the flowers are small, white, and star-shaped, with five deeply bifid petals that appear as ten petals. The genus name Stellaria derives from the Latin stella (star), referring to the characteristic star-shaped appearance of the flowers. The species epithet media means middle or intermediate in Latin, reflecting the plant's intermediate character within the genus Stellaria. The common name chickweed derives from the plant's long history of use as feed for chickens, cage birds, and other small birds; it has been documented as a cage bird supplement across Europe and North America for centuries. The Caryophyllaceae family includes carnations (Dianthus), campion (Silene), and baby's breath (Gypsophila). HawaiiPharm's chickweed herb extract is made from dried Stellaria media above-ground parts.
How do I use chickweed liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking chickweed supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, as the safety of Stellaria media herb extract during pregnancy has not been established; traditional European herbal references include cautions regarding its internal use during early pregnancy. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have known allergies or hypersensitivities to plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, which includes carnations (Dianthus), campion (Silene), and related species, as botanical cross-reactivity is possible. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take prescription medications or have a chronic medical condition, as the interaction profile of Stellaria media herb extract with pharmaceutical drugs has not been fully characterized. Do not consume in excess of the recommended serving, as the saponin content of Stellaria media may cause gastrointestinal discomfort at higher quantities. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
